It’s a pretty beginning of a fall afternoon when I meet up with Bryce Avery, better known as The Rocket Summer at a park in Los Angeles. After about 10 minutes of trying and failing to locate each other in the park, we finally managed to find our way. We caught up quickly after our last meeting at this summer’s APMAs, and then took a nice hike up the trails–me in heels, and him in a leather jacket–to help photographer Erica Lauren get the perfect pictures before coming back down to talk about his “not really a comeback” comeback. Electronic dance music and punk rock may not seem like two peas in a pod, but they’re similar in more ways than you’d think. Structurally, EDM shares the same elements of punk music—both are fast paced, melodic, and employ catchy, memorable riffs.

I want to make something clear before I continue: this is not about me. This is not about MY experience with Nirvana. This is not how I found out when Kurt Cobain died. This is about, after twenty-something years of avoiding everything Kurt post-mortem, that I was finally able to look into a deceased person’s life and I saw something I’d never seen before. I never read his diaries. I’ve barely listened to Nirvana since… Read more »
Brand New Cannot Do Anything Wrong. Ever. So, they opened their show with a new song and I’m pretty sure I cried over it. Okay, I definitely cried over it. Brand New is making their comeback loud and clear. They’ve posted a new promo picture, wiped everything off their Instagram, presented new music, and played “Soco Amaretto Lime” at their show in Denver. Basically, they said “Hey, look, we’re really back now and we’re going to do all of this and make you cry.” Did I mention I’m seeing them for the first time ever this week? Well, I am.… Read more »
