Despite being a major label band since the get-go (not unlike The Ramones or The Sex Pistols ), Southern California ska freaks Goldfinger really do understand punk rock. Singer/guitarist John Feldmann, drummer Darrin Pfeiffer, bassist Kelly Lemieux and guitarist Brian Arthur have been around the block. The annual three-ring circus that is Ozzfest has become a perennial summer celebration of all things loud and abrasive over the last decade – and this summer’s lineup will not disappoint. Black Sabbath and British metal stalwarts Iron Maiden – who will be playing material exclusively from their first four albums – will share headlining duties, and they’ll be joined for the 26-city ride by Rob Zombie and a host of young metal bands, starting on July 15. Most viewers of “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County” see the show’s cast as nothing more than a group of spoiled, plastic rich kids. Some don’t even think they’re real people at all. So one of the show’s stars, 18-year-old Dieter Schmitz, decided to change the public’s perception of him and his fellow OC-ites. And he’s enlisted some pop-punk all-stars to help him do it. Opening band The Disasters are aptly named. There’s just something so incredibly insincere about their music that angered me as much as it bored me. They’re a train wreck. I mean, you’ve got one of the grandfathers of hardcore – NEW YORK Hard core at that – crooning away like he’s part of the SoCal pop-punk elite? It’s all wrong. Eminem might pose a threat to fledgling rappers, glittery pop stars and trash-talkin’ hand puppets, but he’s no threat to the president, the Secret Service determined after looking into some of his recently publicized lyrics. Lines from the song “We As Americans” caught the Secret Service’s attention last week: “I don’t rap for dead presidents/ I’d rather see the president dead”.
