SXSW 2015 Diary: A Subculture in Search of a Subculture

Thursday, March 19th I flew into South by Southwest this afternoon. Tonight, I strode 6th Street. amid the scene here in Austin. I felt a tension between, and within, the musicians, attendees, and the city. The dichotomy is an inclination toward indie values, opposed by the gravitation of commercialism. I realize this as I happen on IFC’s Fairgrounds, which features a music stage, interactive attractions such as a Velcro wall, and food trucks and a beer stand. Kevin Lyman Did a TED Talk, So Listen Up I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time: Kevin Lyman gave a speech at TedxCPP and it was fantastic. The talk covered a bit of his early years and how he got into touring, but on a much more important note, he talked about the dangers that threaten festival culture. He discussed the different age groups and life changes. It’s a wonderful speech for people who are getting too old for things like Warped Tour and Cochella.
