One year after he was crowned “American Idol” champion, David Cook returned to the big blue stage last Wednesday night for charity. Cook performed a version of his song “Permanent,” which was made available on the iTunes Music Store immediately following his appearance, with all proceeds going to Accelerate Brain Trust Cure, a charity dedicated to finding a cure for brain cancer. It is a cause that hits close to home for Cook, who earlier this month lost his brother Adam to brain cancer after a decade-long battle with the disease. And that was evident during Cook’s “Idol” performance. Wearing… Read more »
“Stand and Deliver,” the first song recorded by the reunited No Doubt, leaked yesterday, nearly a month before the band was due to perform the song on a flashback episode of Gossip Girl. Like No Doubt’s cover of Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life,” Gwen Stefani and her bandmates manage to take Adam & The Ants’ “Prince Charming” hit and skew it both more modern and more new wave. Stefani replaces Ant’s thick British vocals from the original with her own valley girl cadence, befitting of the band’s role as early 1980s Los Angeles rockers on Gossip Girl. That episode, a… Read more »
Kanye West is definitely secure with his raps and with himself. On the Grammy stage on Sunday night, he laid the first verse on “Swagga Like Us,” knowing that he had three more acclaimed wordsmiths – Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and T.I. – coming after him on the track, and still felt confident that his rap held up in such strong company. Kanye does exactly what he wants to do, so it’s no surprise that he took the stage in a sparkling jacket that could have come out of Michael Jackson’s closet in 1984. Still, Kanye’s clothes have become a major… Read more »
The Cure’s 14th studio record has been postponed for a second time and will not hit stores until next spring, the band’s record company said on Thursday. “The album got pushed to 2008, more like an April/May release. Robert is still recording,” a Geffen Records spokeswoman said from New York, referring to the band’s frontman Robert Smith. Smith told Reuters in an interview late last year that he was struggling to come up with lyrics to some of the 33 new songs he and the band had recorded. The new album was originally slated to be released in May this… Read more »
The role of Notorious B.I.G. for an upcoming biopic on the rapper will be filled through an open casting call, the film’s producers told “Notorious,” which has been in the works for nearly seven years, will seek its star by auditioning actors and non-actors alike who resemble the rapper, whose real name was Christopher Wallace. Would one expect anything less than a double album from the Cure on the occasion of its 13th studio release? “Rather than cut it down, at the stage we’re at with the band, I’m making this record because I want to enjoy the process and be proud of the finished result,” frontman Robert Smith told Billboard of the as-yet-untitled effort, due in October via Suretone/Geffen. “It isn’t a commercial concern for me.” “What will probably happen is that a double album will come out like a limited edition, mixed by me,” he said. “A single-disc version, which I assume will… Read more »
If you were among the 90 million or so Americans who tuned in to Super Bowl XLI, you were no doubt left with a few questions to go along with your Monday morning hangover: Is Rex Grossman just Neil O’Donnell reincarnated? Do people honestly find Carlos Mencia funny? And what was Prince doing working a version of the Foo Fighters’ “Best of You” into his high-octane halftime set? Well, we may not have the answers to all those quandaries – though we do suggest guzzling some Pedialyte to cure that crippling crapulence. But we can try to get to the… Read more »
MONTEREY, Calif. – U2 frontman and global activist Bono targeted worldwide poverty in his wishes as he was a recipient of the inaugural TED Prize from the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference.
