I think it’s safe to say, “Holy shit!” In the two weeks since the last of these columns, our lives have changed beyond recognition, perhaps for the foreseeable future. Things that we took for granted, like going to the store, now take careful planning. Going to a concert, bar, or club is cancelled, for very real reasons. People are getting sick, people are dying. For Christ’s sake, stay in your homes. Wash your hands. Clean everything. Stay away from other people. Let’s try to make this thing go away as quickly as possible. Don’t be one of those idiots on… Read more »

…This is the Inbox Jukebox: The Wrecks – “Out of Style” The Wrecks are about to get you into trouble. “Out of Style” is a bubbling bouncy belligerent middle-finger type of bop (and your hands are about to go up in the air). So much ‘mosh’ in the lyrics, so much boom in that bassline, so much buzz in the sonics—handclaps are inevitable. Your neighbors will be pounding on your door, but you’ll be yelling “bring that beat back” while they fume. This is alt-rock on fire. Where do celebrity clothes go? What trends… Read more »

What Steven Spielberg thought could be the downfall of the movie industry could be it’s saving grace. Streaming services have long been shut out of the Hollywood clique that is the Academy Awards—along with female directors & people of color—due to some Academy board members’ old school standards. But in a press release today, NBC Universal has announced that ‘Trolls World Tour’ will be available on-demand on it’s scheduled release date as theaters nationwide cautiously close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The studio will also be making both ‘The Hunt’ and ‘The Invisible Man’ available on-demand as early as Friday… Read more »
There’s something inherently off-putting about clowns—the creepy over-exaggerated smiles, the unnatural make-up—but they’re generally supposed to be a sign of fun and happiness. Which is why indie band Circa Waves decided clowns would be the perfect symbol for their upcoming release Sad Happy. “A clown was always an image we thought represented [the album] quite well,” says vocalist/guitarist Kieran Shudall. “Sad Happy is two stark emotions stuck together—I find clowns ultimately terrify people or make them really happy.” When I catch up with Shudall he’s sitting in his Liverpool home with a fresh cup of tea. “It’s very British of… Read more »
