Back in May of this year, actress Ruby Rose announced she would be leaving the title role of Batwoman on the CW show. It came as a shock to many fans, but on July 7th the creative team announced the creation of a new character to be played by Javicia Leslie. Leslie is a bisexual Black woman, making history for the character as the role’s first Black Batwoman. Rather than try to switch the Kate Kane character with another actress, the CW has gone with a totally new character, Ryan Wilder, who doesn’t currently exist in DC Comics. This character… Read more »

I think it’s safe to say, “Holy shit!” In the two weeks since the last of these columns, our lives have changed beyond recognition, perhaps for the foreseeable future. Things that we took for granted, like going to the store, now take careful planning. Going to a concert, bar, or club is cancelled, for very real reasons. People are getting sick, people are dying. For Christ’s sake, stay in your homes. Wash your hands. Clean everything. Stay away from other people. Let’s try to make this thing go away as quickly as possible. Set your alarms, mark your calendar, and tell all your friends (even the ones with… Read more »

THIS IS NOT A DRILL. I REPEAT THIS IS NOT A FREAKING DRILL. The Formatareback. Are you kidding me!? Let’s goooo! Okay, so I posted a few weeks ago that there was some unusual activity regarding The Format—and people began doing investigative work because that’s what the Internet does. People found that they unfollowed everyone except Nate and Sam, then Nate deleted all of his Instagram photos. Then they announced new merch (Of which I bought one of each, including 2 of the 2007 Tour Posters because obviously I would.) And now, yes. Announced last night at their Live at… Read more »
A lot can change in ten years: personalities, tastes, relationships. For Mayday Parade the last ten years have been a chance to grow as a band, explore new ways to entertain, and to connect with their fans. Which is why—almost exactly a decade after seeing them live for the first time—I’m sitting on a tour bus in Chicago, chatting with frontman Derek Sanders. We’re at the back of the bus. On one side of Sanders, guitarist Brooks Betts is fiddling around on a laptop, on the other, bassist Jeremy Lenzo pre-signs a stack of Sunnyland CDs. The window is cracked… Read more »
