California high court upholds gay marriage ban

California’s Supreme Court upheld the state’s gay marriage ban Tuesday but said the 18,000 same-sex weddings that took place before the prohibition passed are still valid – a ruling decried by gay rights activists as a hollow victory. Demonstrators outside the court booed, wept and yelled, “Shame on you!” Activists said they would go back to the voters as early as next year in a bid to repeal the ban. In a 6-1 decision written by Chief Justice Ron George, the court rejected arguments that the ban approved by the voters last fall was such a fundamental change in the… Read more »

Are Paramore the new No Doubt?

I’m about to make a fairly simple comparison seem unnecessarily complex, but the situation demands it. So here it goes: Paramore are the new No Doubt. To do this to any other way would be lazy, not to mention a tad bit insulting. But in this case, there is one glaring similarity between both bands: the dynamic, iconic frontwoman who also doubles as the media focal point. In essence, Hayley Williams and Gwen Stefani are covered the same and contextualized the same. Yes, they’re both pretty girls with dye jobs who are showing the guys how it’s done and are… Read more »

Blink-182 return to the stage in Los Angeles

HOLLYWOOD – It had been four and a half years since Blink-182 performed together on a stage. A December 2004 gig in Dublin, Ireland was the last time, to be exact. Well, now it’s been not even a week. Last Thursday night, the reunited Blink returned to the stage at a T-Mobile party at the Paramount Studios, ripping through a surprise three-song set before an audience of stunned (and thoroughly hyperventilating) guests. Blink tore through “The Rock Show,” “Feeling This” and “Dammit,” showing no signs of rust or any ill effects of their sometimes contentious breakup as they laughed, struck… Read more »

Blink-182 take us inside their wild pre-tour party

LOS ANGELES – There was a mariachi band, flaming margaritas and lots of musicians on Monday night at the El Compadre Mexican restaurant as Blink-182 took over the joint for a fiesta in celebration of their upcoming summer tour. And while there were many festivities – the mariachi band belted out Blink tunes and the margaritas went late into the night – the party also served another function: breaking the ice. After all, when you’ve got a tour that’s positively packed with bands (not just Weezer and Fall Out Boy, but a rotating cast of opening acts like Panic at… Read more »

No Doubt puts touring before studio work

In between bites of a Cobb salad at New York’s Tribeca Grand Hotel, Gwen Stefani is explaining why No Doubt is going on tour for the first time in five years without a new album to promote. “Honestly, it’s procrastination,” she says with a sigh. “My plan was to get pregnant and write a record, but instead of writing, I just ate all the time.” Stefani laughs as she pops a tomato in her mouth. “Writing is always really hard for me – I hate it and hate it and then I do it, and I’m happy it’s done,” she… Read more »

Blink-182, Weezer, Fall Out Boy to tour

Well, it’s official. More than a month after rumors of a Blink-182/Weezer tour started circulating, and less than a week after the All-American Rejects hinted they’d be joining the bill, we’ve finally gotten to the bottom of what’s sure to be one of the biggest rock tours of the summer. As first reported in Rolling Stone (then subsequently posted on Blink bassist/singer Mark Hoppus’ blog and confirmed by the band’s label, Interscope), Blink and Weezer will be touring together this summer, and they’re taking Fall Out Boy with them. The tour kicks off July 24 and will run until October,… Read more »

Paramore tackles friendships on forthcoming LP

Paramore will release the follow-up to their breakout album Riot! in September, the band’s label confirmed yesterday. “We made a record that is exactly what we set out to make,” fiery frontwoman Hayley Williams said on the band’s LiveJournal page. “There’s fast, there’s slow, and in between… happy, angry, desperate and over it. And I can’t believe it’s real.” For their third album, the Nashville power punks worked with Rob Cavallo, who produced Green Day’s American Idiot, Dave Matthews Band’s Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King and Paramore’s own contributions to the Twilight soundtrack, including the hit single “Decode.” “When… Read more »

Linkin Park to record 'Transformers 2' theme

Linkin Park will record a new song and contribute to the score of this summer’s guaranteed blockbuster Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, Mike Shinoda announced on his Web site. “In addition, we have been offered the unique opportunity to help score the film,” Shinoda wrote. “The song we wrote is being used as one of the themes, and we will be writing various interpolations on that theme, and trying out some other thematic ideas.” In a studio update posted on March 28, Shinoda hinted that the song “is built on layered, heavy synths” and “it creates a nice interplay… Read more »

Taking Back Sunday is 'New Again' June 2

For Taking Back Sunday, New Again is more than an album title, it’s a declaration. “We kicked around a bunch of different titles, but that one always remained the top of the list, and that’s because it really does feel like a new band,” vocalist Adam Lazzara said. Taking Back Sunday is not turning their collective back on what is already a storied past. The rejuvenated group is looking clearly to the here and now. “Leading up to this record we took the biggest break that we’ve taken since we started touring just to kind of learn how to be… Read more »
