SXSW 2015 Diary: A Subculture in Search of a Subculture


Thursday, March 19th I flew into South by Southwest this afternoon. Tonight, I strode 6th Street. amid the scene here in Austin. I felt a tension between, and within, the musicians, attendees, and the city. The dichotomy is an inclination toward indie values, opposed by the gravitation of commercialism. I realize this as I happen on IFC’s Fairgrounds, which features a music stage, interactive attractions such as a Velcro wall, and food trucks and a beer stand. We are usually skeptical about the influence of sponsors in underground metal and hardcore but we suspend our criticism when Game Of Thrones is involved. HBO is serving Killswitch Engage-flavored Kool Aid and we are shamelessly drinking every last drop. The extended version of “Loyalty” has the audio from this unforgettable scene (spoiler alert) in season 4. In all honesty, the song itself is much heavier than we expected. The yarling chorus is there, we expect that from commercially successful hard rock bands, otherwise “Loyalty” hangs with some of the hardest songs on this playlist. Twenty One Pilots Announce New Album + Tour Dates


twenty one pilots have announced their next album ‘Blurryface.’ The record will be released May 19th. The band are also streaming their new song “Fairly Local,” and have announced U.S. tour dates with Echosmith for the fall.
