Thursday, March 19th I flew into South by Southwest this afternoon. Tonight, I strode 6th Street. amid the scene here in Austin. I felt a tension between, and within, the musicians, attendees, and the city. The dichotomy is an inclination toward indie values, opposed by the gravitation of commercialism. I realize this as I happen on IFC’s Fairgrounds, which features a music stage, interactive attractions such as a Velcro wall, and food trucks and a beer stand. It’s like a festival within a festival and it is a microcosm of SXSW. It’s an insular fantasy realm manifested by marketers and… Read more »
Matthew Broderick turned 53 last week. If that’s insane for you to imagine, we’re right there with you. If you’re only familiar with his stellar work in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, then here’s a list of five other movies that’ll make you love him even more. WarGames — Would you like to play a game? Don’t worry, that’ll make sense once you watch the movie. This 80’s flick has some serious Internet security vibes that will make you feel as though it was just released this year. However, the awesome haircuts and jeans will tell you otherwise. Biloxi Blues… Read more »
An Attack On Titan Movie Teaser Was Released and I’m Dead If you’re an anime lover like me, this probably has you in a giant tizzy—I am so excited about this movie. (Granted I haven’t finished the series yet because I never have time to breathe anymore, but I’m working on it.) Attack On Titan itself has become a cult-classic turned mainstream anime phenomenon that I’ve been working on for two years. But it’s the most heart-wrenching, tear-inducing, make a grown man cry openly without embarrassment anime you will ever see–it’s so worth taking a peek at the live… Read more »
Kevin Lyman Did a TED Talk, So Listen Up I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time: Kevin Lyman gave a speech at TedxCPP and it was fantastic. The talk covered a bit of his early years and how he got into touring, but on a much more important note, he talked about the dangers that threaten festival culture. He discussed the different age groups and life changes. It’s a wonderful speech for people who are getting too old for things like Warped Tour and Cochella. Basically, you get to see, again, why Kevin Lyman is so fan-freaking-tastic.… Read more »
Travis Barker Did A Thing And I’m Happy About It This will be the thrilling sequel to the book series I decided to start last week. But no, Travis deserves all the candy and flowers in the world for finally saying what we’ve all been thinking… Tom Delonge uses pro-tools and needs to grow a pair and quit. Beyond that, Travis’s interview with Alternative Nation was a thrilling, and exciting look into the future of Blink-182, hopefully with Matt Skiba, and what he’s doing on the side. I think this new Blink album is going to be one of their… Read more »
I spoke with my buddy Will Pugh, lead singer of one of the better bands of our generation and this scene, Cartel, about the upcoming 10 year anniversary tour of Chroma… in which the band will be playing the whole god damn thing.
I spoke with John about this year’s festival – he says there will be even MORE bands announced, and addresses how the festival came about this year, the game plan behind it, going the opposite direction from an EDM focused fest, and bringing it back to the Rock.
Just in case you missed anything while living under your rock, here’s all the insanity you can handle from February 23rd-March 1st.
When I was a kid there were two debates: Star Trek or Star Wars? If your answer was “Star Trek” it was immediately followed by a second question: Original or Next Generation (Enterprise)? The Star Trek universe didn’t stop there, though. It meandered with Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and then, finally, a full cinematic reboot was bestowed upon us with the original characters given new life by J.J. Abrams. Which leads us to now… Which leads us to today. The actor who played one of the greatest characters of all time has passed away. Leonard Nimoy, known most commonly as… Read more »
