For the humdrum New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers, putting on a show to match the glitz, glitter and star power of the rest of Super Bowl Sunday was no easy task. Typical of America’s biggest unofficial holiday, the game was only the icing on an over-the-top extravaganza. There was a gleaming new $450 million stadium to show off, a slew of pricey new ads, and Beyonce, Janet Jackson and P. Diddy to share the field. The biggest cliffhanger of the week wasn’t who would win, but whether Janet’s brother, Michael, would show up. He didn’t, but Justin Timberlake did,… Read more »
Downloading music online from rogue file-sharing networks got 14-year-old Annie Leith sued for thousands of dollars. Now it has landed her a leading spot on a national ad that will debut during the Super Bowl. Leith and her 17-year-old sister downloaded 960 songs over a three-year period using the popular Kazaa program. But the free music binge got Leith ensnared in the legal dragnet cast by the Recording Industry Association of America in September. “We didn’t know it was illegal,” the New York City high school freshman said Friday. The lawsuit was ultimately settled for $3,000. But Leith couldn’t pass… Read more »

Hoobastank opened their spring tour with 311 Monday with all the stage presence and salesmanship of a band bursting to ditch its warm-up act status. During their 45-minute set at the Paramount Theatre, singer Douglas Robb glad-handed the crowd at the front of the stage, hyped an upcoming show on a bill with Incubus and reminded the audience of his band’s name not once, not twice, but four times. (As if you forget a handle like Hoobastank.) “That was lovely,” Robb declared after several songs. It was a surprisingly Martha Stewart-ish term for a band pounding out kick-to-the-head mosh music.… Read more »
Entertainment Weekly reports that U2 played the Super Bowl halftime show for free. The magazine reports that the NFL was willing to pay them but they didn’t want any money. Janet Jackson was the first choice for the halftime show but when NFL bigwigs caught a U2 show in New York City they felt the band would set the right tone for the festivities after Sept. 11. The report says Mariah Carey and Paul McCartney also were not paid for their services, but the NFL picked up their travel expenses.

From there, Bush will play Midwest cities including Milwaukee on March 2, St. Louis on March 3, Chicago on March 5 and Detroit on March 8.
