Thursday, March 19th I flew into South by Southwest this afternoon. Tonight, I strode 6th Street. amid the scene here in Austin. I felt a tension between, and within, the musicians, attendees, and the city. The dichotomy is an inclination toward indie values, opposed by the gravitation of commercialism. I realize this as I happen on IFC’s Fairgrounds, which features a music stage, interactive attractions such as a Velcro wall, and food trucks and a beer stand. It’s like a festival within a festival and it is a microcosm of SXSW. It’s an insular fantasy realm manifested by marketers and… Read more »

We had great expectations for Psycroptic when “Echoes to Come” was released as a single November 2014. Then again, Psycroptic‘s self titled is their second full length since 2008 (sixth overall). Fans are accustomed to waiting for the Tasmanian death prog quartet, and they were awarded again in 2015. Perhaps there is broader commentary to be made about the music industry, or metal specifically. The two year full length album cycle is a costly grind in this genre. Moonspell released four albums from 1995 to 1999 but Extinct is their second since Night Eternal in 2008. One should also consider… Read more »
Not only is Ben Liebsch picking up where the band left off, but he’s also ringing in a new era, and from here, YMAEWK are bound to go far.
Oh Honey has announced the release of their upcoming EP Wish You Were Here.
Poltergeist Is Getting a Reboot And We’re All Going To Die The worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life, Poltergeist, was SCARY ENOUGH the first time. It is a big part of why I can’t watch scary movies without being in actual fear of peeing myself. (Also, there is no “cute date” option for me that will help me get over this. Ever.) The reboot of Poltergeist will incorporate modern technology, only adding to the freakiness and torment it will undoubtedly put you through. The movie is set to be released July 24th in 3D screens across… Read more »
A Loss For Words have announced the first of their final shows together as a band in 2015, accompanied by Pentimento, Speak Low If You Speak Love, and Like Pacific.
We can’t get enough of the new Theories single, “Cycle of Decay”. It is so heavy one must cease all other activity and vigorously headbang for almost three and a half minutes until the song is over. Exercise caution while driving if you hear it on Howl. For legal reasons, we recommend you pull over. Napalm Death registers a four week low… at third place. They dominated this playlist through January along with Sylosis and Lord Dying. Erra makes their first appearance as a featured band on the Howl playlist this week. They have “extremely limited” physical copies of Moments… Read more »
Brand New Give Us More… The most perfect band in life, Brand New, finally announced some more West Coast shows this spring with Circa Survive and Desaparecidos alternating on specific dates. Their news was the biggest of the week for me. Over the past couple of years Brand New have toured consistently, and they’ve fueled rumors they’re in the studio working on a 2015 release–no doubt with an insane name. No word yet on when they will release an album or if they just want to toy with us forever… because they can. This means after six long years of… Read more »
