Celebrating Asian American or Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American or Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month, and it would be terribly remiss of us to not cover that in this column.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, meaning it’s time to prep your brunches, order nice flowers, and make a sick playlist for your mom, grandma, older sister, and/or whoever had a hand in making you the rockstar you are today. While we can’t order an Edible Arrangement for you, we have handpicked our favorite tracks that honor all forms of motherhood and womanhood. Stereotypically, pop-punkers and modern rockers are associated with hating their hometowns and hurling all their angst at their parents. From twenty one pilots’ breakout single “House Of Gold” all the way to Miley Cyrus’ 2019 feminist anthem “Mother’s… Read more »
Queer Boston-based four-piece shallow pools have launched their fresh single “IHYK” via Equal Vision Records. The new release follows their previous singles “Now Or Never” and “Say What You Want,” which were co-written with groundbreaking LGBTQIA+ artist Lynn Gunn of PVRIS. “IHYK” is showcased by an infectious, earworm chorus highlighted by vocalist Glynnis Brennan’s passionate delivery flourishing across crisp guitar riffs courtesy of guitarist Jess Gromada. However, it’s drummer Ali Ajemian’s intricate fills and lively that drive the track forward complemented seamlessly by bassist Haley Senft’s groovy rhythms. Together, the group demonstrates their exceptional musicianship and ability to craft memorable… Read more »
With four previous studio albums each offering a fresh perspective of electrifying emo-pop, Kicksie has released their all-new record Slouch via Counter Intuitive Records. In an array of slow-burn ballads and unabashed honesty, Slouch reads more like Giuliana Mormile’s personal diary where they’re free to be who they want to be and articulate their most intimate moments. Opening with the kaleidoscope-esque track, “Closure” before blooming into the album’s third track “Boyfriend,” Slouch is an amalgamation of highs and lows that represent Mormile’s intimate journey as an artist. We had the chance to speak with Mormile, the mastermind behind Kicksie ahead… Read more »

It’s hard enough to make it in a competitive industry when you’re young. But if you’re also a person of color and/or part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, it can feel next to impossible. For Meet Me @ The Altar—a trio of young women of color, two of whom are queer—the only way around those industry hurdles is through them. “We’re the perfect mesh of like almost every single type of person in the world,” says vocalist Edith Victoria. I’m catching up with the band over Zoom, the day before their debut full-length, Past // Present // Future, is set to… Read more »

On Sunday, June 26th, we participated in Pride along with the Los Angeles LGBT Center at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The event itself was a giant picnic with bars, food trucks, face painting, and the idobi Radio photo experience. The entertainment was DJ Nico blasting the best, high-energy, party music and a drag show with Queens Amber Crane and Lauren Banall. There was something for everyone here, just as Pride should be. When you walked into the event, you were met with a burst of positive energy and people letting loose and having a great time. Alongside idobi, Tito’s Vodka… Read more »
