2015: That Ex You Hate and Resolve to Never Date Again

Here’s to a less irritating 2016—this year, we got together all of our least favorite pop culture icons and begged them to please, please give us a break this year. They dominated in 2015, and we deserve some time off, or at least some serious attitude changes, dammit.

ICYMI – April 19, 2015

TheBillboardChart Needs a Streaming Makeover With All Time Low’s number one album debut debunked by the new Billboard standard, many people in our scene posed the question if we need to rethink the way Billboard included streaming into it’s tallies. Right now, every 1,500 streams of a song off an album = 1 album sale. Thomas Nassiff of Absolutepunk wrote a wonderful short piece on the matter. In my opinion, it’s crap. A successful single does not an album make. If that were true, Vanilla Ice would have probably been much more successful and have never gotten arrested for stealing.… Read more »

Leonard Nimoy dies at 83

When I was a kid there were two debates: Star Trek or Star Wars? If your answer was “Star Trek” it was immediately followed by a second question: Original or Next Generation (Enterprise)? The Star Trek universe didn’t stop there, though. It meandered with Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and then, finally, a full cinematic reboot was bestowed upon us with the original characters given new life by J.J. Abrams. Which leads us to now… Which leads us to today. The actor who played one of the greatest characters of all time has passed away. Leonard Nimoy, known most commonly as… Read more »

Music tax faces strong opposition

The industry gets upset when anyone calls this a “tax” so I’ll use the “voluntary license” term, even though tax is much more accurate. A true voluntary license wouldn’t require everyone having a certain provider to opt-in, but that’s exactly what this plan would require. In fact, as the slides indicate, eventually it would basically require all ISPs to “opt-in” forcing all of their members to “opt-in.” Suddenly, everyone has to pay. That’s not a voluntary license. It’s a tax. However, even if we step back and pretend it’s really a voluntary license, and even if we grant the premise… Read more »
