The Selfie Sticks Have Been Banned From More Music Festivities A couple of months ago I told you about a venue in the U.K. banning selfie sticks. Well, it just got better. Both Coachella and Lollapalooza have now also banned the death sticks that people use to take selfies with (side note: I totally wasn’t using one at the Grand Canyon last weekend or anything…) Anyway, this is a VERY good thing. Thursday, March 19th I flew into South by Southwest this afternoon. Tonight, I strode 6th Street. amid the scene here in Austin. I felt a tension between, and within, the musicians, attendees, and the city. The dichotomy is an inclination toward indie values, opposed by the gravitation of commercialism. I realize this as I happen on IFC’s Fairgrounds, which features a music stage, interactive attractions such as a Velcro wall, and food trucks and a beer stand. The full lineup for this year’s Lollapalooza festival has been announced.
Brand New have added a handful of summer tour dates across the US, with more headlining dates and festivals to be announced later.
Pentimento have announced their signing to Bad Timing Records. The band anticipates a 7″ this July and there sophomore full-length this fall with the label.

Since the homogenization of South by Southwest by the mainstream, it has become fashionable among music critics and self-anointed culture commentators to dismiss music festivals as passé. They claim media conglomerates, bringing bloat, have diluted the musical variety which could be counted on at SXSW to make it palatable to general tastes. Kevin Lyman Did a TED Talk, So Listen Up I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time: Kevin Lyman gave a speech at TedxCPP and it was fantastic. The talk covered a bit of his early years and how he got into touring, but on a much more important note, he talked about the dangers that threaten festival culture. He discussed the different age groups and life changes. It’s a wonderful speech for people who are getting too old for things like Warped Tour and Cochella.
