Major-Label Refugees Eye Indie Homes

Songstress Sheryl Crow is on track to be the highest debut performance when the latest pop album charts are released Wednesday, challenging reigning Universal Music labelmate Ashanti for the top spot. But Crow’s latest effort, “C’mon C’mon,” her first studio release since the platinum “Globe Sessions” four years ago, also leads a sizable roster of artists bowing this month that have had a rocky history with the rapidly consolidating major-label system. Crow herself was one of several artists to question her future with Universal Music after the label giant acquired her alma mater, A&M Records. While the star and her… Read more »

New Neil Young song inspired by doomed passengers

Rock legend Neil Young has written and recorded a song about the passengers who fought back against their Sept. 11 hijackers – a song described by one record company executive “as so chilling you feel like you are on that plane.” The song, a salute to heroism called “Let’s Roll,” was shipped to radio stations this week but will not be sold in stores, Young’s recording company Reprise Records said Wednesday. It was inspired by the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11 who apparently decided to fight back against their hijackers after hearing by telephone of the… Read more »

FEATURE-Australian Punk Rockers Living End On A ''Roll''

One day Australia’s hottest new rock exports are opening for heavy metal heroes AC/DC, the next day they are sharing the bill with race horses. Bands that want to make it big sometimes have to swallow their pride. During the 1960s, rock acts appearing on Ed Sullivan’s prestigious TV variety show were squeezed in between chimpanzees and circus clowns. In 2001, Australian punk-rock trio the Living End recently played for several thousand fans at a Los Angeles racetrack. But their afternoon set was punctuated by a 10-minute break so the horses would not panic as they galloped past the makeshift… Read more »

12 New-Age Protest Songs To Listen To This 4th of July

For Americans across the nation, this July 4th might not feel like one worth celebrating. In Trump’s first six months in office, he’s sent the military on U.S. citizens in Los Angeles. ICE arrests have broken innocent families apart, and in most cases, those being deported have no criminal record (or are actual American citizens). Countless pieces of legislation were introduced or passed that take direct aim at the LGBTQ+ community. Federal workers were laid off en masse, the genocide in Palestine rages on, and this is merely scratching the surface. Refer back, even further, to 2023 when SCOTUS overturned… Read more »
