idobi Howl Featured Playlist – Week of March 9th, 2015

The Agonist  steps  their way from third to first in three weeks, a feat no other band has achieved in approximately six months of publishing a playlist. Eye Of Providence marks the debut of Vicky Psarakis who joined The Agonist after Alissa White-Gluz replaced Angela Gossow in Arch Enemy.  The moral of this story?  These bands fill a niche within a niche genre. It would seem sexist if not for the lack of metal bands who have replaced male singers with women (Arch Enemy  is one). We know Howl’s audience is young enough that the bulk of Blind Guardian’s music… Read more »

idobi Howl Featured Playlist – Week of March 2nd, 2015

We try to keep our featured tracks as hype-free as possible. Our playlist should  reflect the very best (and ideally, newest) metal and hardcore out there right now.  That’s why we waited for Stick To Your Guns‘ Disobedient release week to pass before we revisited the album for consideration at the top of our featured tracks. Sure enough, this album strikes the critical balance between fast hardcore and clean vocals that every melodic hardcore or metal band ultimately tries to achieve. Also worth praise is the minimal presence of samples that once preceded many tracks in older Stick To Your… Read more »

idobi Howl Featured Playlist – Week of February 23rd, 2015

We try not to get carried away with industry talk but Torche should be commended for superb timing with the December release of “Minions”, the first single from Restarter out this week. Relapse Records took advantage of the music industry’s slowest season and the track kicked around Howl’s playlist for three months since. The Agonist continues to rip with Eye of Providence, their first effort with vocalist Vicky Psarakis. The band was on the rise before Arch Enemy recruited Alissa White-Gluz in 2014. “Gates of Horn and Ivory” proves The Agonist hasn’t lost a step and  can compete with the… Read more »

idobi Howl Featured Playlist – February 16th, 2015

Rotting Out lands a top berth on Howl’s featured tracks this week, possibly with the help of hardcore’s most charming smile and sheer intimidation.  More of what we’re talking about in the video for “Born“. Stick To Your Guns returns to the spotlight with the release of Disobedient which has a cameo from the aforementioned friendly, muscular Walter of Rotting Out. We hope two mentions in one review will keep us safe from that gentleman. Ensiferum, 36 Crazyfists and Dr. Living Dead! debut both on Howl and among our features. If you think you know what Dr. Living Dead! sounds… Read more »

idobi Howl Featured Playlist – February 9th, 2015

Sylosis takes the top spot after three weeks bouncing between second and fourth place. One of three releases by UK bands in our featured playlist (Napalm Death and Enter Shikari), Dormant Heart  has just enough prog parts to keep the thrash riffs from shredding too relentlessly. Yes,  it actually happens. Call Of The Void and Feed Her To The Sharks return to Howl’s features this week. Each band released early singles that spent two or more weeks among our top tracks. We try not to commit the radio sin of overplaying singles. Then again, this is Theories‘ third week on… Read more »

idobi Howl Welcomes Metal DNA to show lineup

idobi Howl will take an intellectual approach to metal and hardcore with Metal DNA, the latest addition to Howl’s growing lineup of original programming. Music blogger and podcast host Shawn Kupfer will analyze a new band every week, deconstructing their sound by playing music which influenced that band and tracking his subject’s  impact on other bands. In the debut of Metal DNA, Kupfer breaks down Slipknot, linking them to Slayer, White Zombie and more surprising influences like Beastie Boys. Metal DNA airs Saturday nights at 8pm ET on idobi Howl. Fans can stream Howl at ido.bi/howl or on mobile devices… Read more »

idobi Howl Featured Playlist – February 2nd, 2015

We can’t get enough of the new Theories single, “Cycle of Decay”. It is so heavy one must cease all other activity and vigorously headbang for almost three and a half minutes until the song is over. Exercise caution while driving if you hear it on Howl. For legal reasons, we recommend you pull over. Napalm Death registers a four week low… at third place. They dominated  this playlist through January along with Sylosis and Lord Dying. Erra makes their first appearance as a featured band on the Howl playlist this week.  They have “extremely limited” physical copies of  Moments… Read more »
