Lil Wayne says 'Rebirth' is ready to go

After being pushed back a few times, production is finally finished on Lil Wayne’s Rebirth album, and it is ready to hit the stores. “Expect great music. That’s all I ever want them to expect from me,” Wayne said after the MTV Movie Awards. He added that this album was an opportunity to showcase the direction he has taken since his last release. “I wanted to grow and show my growth as well,” he said. “It’s a difference from when you go in a room and come out and you’re better and everyone says, ‘How did you do that?’ So… Read more »

Gay groups grow impatient with Obama

President Barack Obama’s promises of change are falling short for one core Democratic constituency: gays and lesbians, whose leaders say Obama’s administration is not keeping up with the times. Gay rights campaigners, most of them Democrats who supported Obama in November, have begun to voice their public frustration with Obama’s inaction, small jokes at their community’s expense and deafening silence on what they see as the signal civil rights issue of this era. His campaign promises to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and the military ban on openly gay and lesbian servicemembers have not been fulfilled. And the news,… Read more »

Pearl Jam confirms partnership with Target

As Internet reports suggested, Pearl Jam was indeed recording a Target commercial under the direction of Cameron Crowe last week at Seattle’s Showbox theater. But there is more to the story than an exclusive retail relationship. It has been known that Pearl Jam is no longer under contract after 18 years of recording for Sony-affiliated labels, and there has been a good deal of speculation about who would release the rock act’s next album. Kelly Curtis, who has managed Pearl Jam since its inception, conducted a wide-ranging interview Sunday night, confirming that the band’s next album — rumored to be… Read more »

Susan Boyle loses her cool after being taunted

A spokeswoman for Susan Boyle said Thursday that the Britain’s Got Talent finalist lost her cool after being harassed by journalists at a London hotel. The spokeswoman said the golden-voiced and fluffy-haired singer, who became an overnight sensation after appearing on the show, was distressed after being taunted by two reporters at the Wembley Plaza Hotel on Wednesday. “Two journalists were harassing her and pushed her over the edge. She was left slightly distressed and the journalists were removed from the building by police,” the spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity because she represents all of the contestants on the… Read more »

Bon Jovi, Neil Young bring Jazz Fest to eclectic end

In the weeks leading up to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the recession was the tense undercurrent beneath the excitement over its 40th anniversary. The lineup was announced early this year to extend the ticket-buying season, and other festivals canceled or scaled down. Corporate sponsors Borders, AIG and Southern Comfort withdrew their support. But any concerns about Jazz Fest’s economic well-being evaporated Saturday when Bon Jovi delivered the second-largest audience in festival history. The hard rock band was this festival’s cause célèbre, evidence for festival veterans that Jazz Fest is losing its way, trading New Orleans music for… Read more »

Paramore moves beyond "Misery Business"

It is one if its biggest songs, the one that put it on the map and got it to where it is today. But on its new album, Paramore is looking to put “Misery Business” behind it. Looking back, lead singer Hayley Wiliams said that the song provided a much needed catharsis. That release, she said, paved the way for Paramore to complete work on its new album. “‘Misery Business’ was a big step for me, because it was sort of an embarrassing, vengeful emotion, and I just felt really bratty. And it was good for me to get out,”… Read more »

Taking Back Sunday readies “New Again” before tour

Taking Back Sunday gave its fourth LP a fitting title: New Again. For frontman Adam Lazarra, the addition of guitarist Matt Fazzi last spring has given the five-piece a wildly fresh perspective. Bassist Matt Rubano agrees that the band is embracing a new genre with its new release. “The idea that we’ve really embraced on this record is that it’s up to us to decide what Taking Back Sunday sounds like,” bassist Matt Rubano said. “We always want to be redefining what that means, and there’s stuff on this record I think in the past we would have stayed away… Read more »

California high court upholds gay marriage ban

California’s Supreme Court upheld the state’s gay marriage ban Tuesday but said the 18,000 same-sex weddings that took place before the prohibition passed are still valid – a ruling decried by gay rights activists as a hollow victory. Demonstrators outside the court booed, wept and yelled, “Shame on you!” Activists said they would go back to the voters as early as next year in a bid to repeal the ban. In a 6-1 decision written by Chief Justice Ron George, the court rejected arguments that the ban approved by the voters last fall was such a fundamental change in the… Read more »
