Interview: Social Distortion’s Mike Ness on travel


Mike Ness is the sole remaining original member of Social Distortion, the southern California rockabilly punk band that rose to prominence during the 1980s.

The group turned June Carter Cash’s “Ring of Fire” into a staple of rock radio, and Ness’ hardscrabble youth inspired such hits as “Story of My Life” and “Prison Bound.”

Social Distortion’s first album in more than six years, “Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes,” recently debuted at No. 4 on the U.S. pop chart, the highest ranking in the band’s career. The road warriors will begin a U.S. tour in Albuquerque on Tuesday, and then hit Europe for the summer festivals.

TV on the Radio’s Gerard Smith Dies of Lung Cancer


TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith has died of lung cancer, the band announced on its official website Wednesday.

“We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer,” the band’s statement reads. “Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly.”

Aerosmith Steven Tyler grants dying man’s wish


The colors were a bit faded, but the design of Lawrence Ori’s only tattoo was still visible. He couldn’t raise his arm proudly to show you anymore, but you could still see the Aerosmith logo there on his bicep.

It’s not just the tattoo. Aerosmith weaved its way through Ori’s life in both obvious and subtle ways. His license plate read “ROCKN” and his cell phone played the band’s classic “Dream On”.
