Thursday, March 19th I flew into South by Southwest this afternoon. Tonight, I strode 6th Street. amid the scene here in Austin. I felt a tension between, and within, the musicians, attendees, and the city. The dichotomy is an inclination toward indie values, opposed by the gravitation of commercialism. Since the homogenization of South by Southwest by the mainstream, it has become fashionable among music critics and self-anointed culture commentators to dismiss music festivals as passé. They claim media conglomerates, bringing bloat, have diluted the musical variety which could be counted on at SXSW to make it palatable to general tastes.
