AAPI Representation in Hollywood


Last year a report from USC brought to light that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders make up less than 6% of speaking roles in the entertainment industry and 4% of lead roles. The study looked at 13,000 popular films and found that of the 4% with AAPI leads, only 6 were women, 0 were women over 40, 0 were in the LGBTQ+ community, and 14 were Dwayne Johnson. Film Review: Parallel Mothers


Basically: A tale of friendship between two women who meet while giving birth in the hospital. I honestly don’t know how to write about this film. Pedro Almodóvar isn’t the type of filmmaker you get from the States or the UK where films tend to follow a simple format about a particular subject that goes from A to B to C etc. I first discovered Almodóvar in the 2000s, while I was in my twenties, and his multilayered stories about women were something I’d never experienced before.
