We are usually skeptical about the influence of sponsors in underground metal and hardcore but we suspend our criticism when Game Of Thrones is involved. HBO is serving Killswitch Engage-flavored Kool Aid and we are shamelessly drinking every last drop. The extended version of “Loyalty” has the audio from this unforgettable scene (spoiler alert) in season 4. In all honesty, the song itself is much heavier than we expected. The yarling chorus is there, we expect that from commercially successful hard rock bands, otherwise “Loyalty” hangs with some of the hardest songs on this playlist. Theories returns to Howl’s top… Read more »

An Attack On Titan  Movie Teaser Was Released and I’m Dead If you’re an anime lover like me, this probably has you in a giant tizzy—I am so excited about this movie. (Granted I haven’t finished the series yet because I never have time to breathe anymore, but I’m working on it.) Attack On Titan itself has become a cult-classic turned mainstream anime phenomenon that I’ve been working on for two years. But it’s the most heart-wrenching, tear-inducing, make a grown man cry openly without embarrassment anime you will ever see–it’s so worth taking a peek at the live… Read more »

We had great expectations for Psycroptic when “Echoes to Come” was released as a single November 2014. Then again,  Psycroptic‘s self titled is their second full length since 2008 (sixth overall). Fans are accustomed to waiting for the Tasmanian death prog quartet, and they were awarded again in 2015. Perhaps there is broader commentary to be made about the music industry, or metal specifically. The two year full length album cycle is a costly grind in this genre. Moonspell released four albums from 1995 to 1999 but Extinct is their second since Night Eternal in 2008. One should also consider… Read more »

Kevin Lyman Did a TED Talk, So Listen Up I’ve been waiting for this for a very long time: Kevin Lyman gave a speech at TedxCPP and it was fantastic. The talk covered a bit of his early years and how he got into touring, but on a much more important note, he talked about the dangers that threaten festival culture. He discussed the different age groups and life changes. It’s a wonderful speech for people who are getting too old for things like Warped Tour and Cochella. Basically, you get to see, again, why Kevin Lyman is so fan-freaking-tastic.… Read more »

The Agonist  steps  their way from third to first in three weeks, a feat no other band has achieved in approximately six months of publishing a playlist. Eye Of Providence marks the debut of Vicky Psarakis who joined The Agonist after Alissa White-Gluz replaced Angela Gossow in Arch Enemy.  The moral of this story?  These bands fill a niche within a niche genre. It would seem sexist if not for the lack of metal bands who have replaced male singers with women (Arch Enemy  is one). We know Howl’s audience is young enough that the bulk of Blind Guardian’s music… Read more »

Travis Barker Did A Thing And I’m Happy About It This will be the thrilling sequel to the book series I decided to start last week. But no, Travis deserves all the candy and flowers in the world for finally saying what we’ve all been thinking… Tom Delonge uses pro-tools and needs to grow a pair and quit. Beyond that, Travis’s interview with Alternative Nation was a thrilling, and exciting look into the future of Blink-182, hopefully with Matt Skiba, and what he’s doing on the side. I think this new Blink album is going to be one of their… Read more »
