Hoping to broaden its relevance to the music industry in the face of increasing competition from other social networking sites, MySpace will roll out a suite of services and initiatives as part of what company officials are calling MySpace Music 2.0. Band guitarist Frank Vicario has come out with this statement as to why the band are throwing in the towel after so many years: “It’s no mystery that the popularity of the band has been waning over the past few years and it’s tough to keep flogging a dead horse when our hearts are in other places,” Vicario stated. “Many people had already pigeonholed what they perceived our sound to be and were reluctant to… Read more »

Band Buys Trees to Offset Tour Emissions

Pearl Jam are buying trees to make up for their tour. Pearl Jam has cut a deal with Conservation International to buy a 1,400 square-mile area of rainforest in Madagascar. The band has figured out their tour will create 5,700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s from the trucks, buses and airplanes that will move their tour through its 30,000 mile route, plus the 1 million fans who will drive to see them. In addition, the forest is in a biodiversity hotspot and includes rare plants and animals, including three species of endangered lemurs. The band recently caused a controversy… Read more »

New Software Quietly Diverts Sales Commissions

Some popular online services are using a new kind of software to divert sales commissions that would otherwise be paid to small online merchants by big sites like Amazon and eToys. Critics call the software parasite-ware and stealware. But the sites that use the software, which is made by nearly 20 companies and used by dozens, say that it is perfectly legal, because their users agree to the diversion. The amounts involved are estimated by those in the industry to have mounted into the hundreds of thousands of dollars and are likely to continue to grow – in part because… Read more »
