It’s a happy day for sad music lovers, as The National‘s “Laugh Track” featuring Phoebe Bridgers got a brand-new music video. This track serves as the third collaboration with boygenius‘ own Bridgers behind “This Isn’t Helping” and “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend.”

The National tapped the artists behind Bob’s Burgers to bring “Laugh Track” to life with a unique animation style via 3D animator Adam Phillips and director Bernard Derriman. Unlike the colorful Bob’s Burgers scenes, this music video has gray, muted tones, matching the relaxed, melancholic vibes of both musical acts. “So turn on the laugh track/Everyone knows you’re a wreck/You’re never this quiet, your smile is cracking/You just haven’t found what you’re looking for yet,” sings Matt Berninger.

Check out the new music video below.

Of their collaboration with Bridgers, Berninger notes, “Her voice is the soft edge of the song. It takes some of the snarky, sarcastic bitterness out of it and makes it sweet and gentle.”

Laugh Track” serves as the title track for The National‘s most recent album, which arrived on September 18, 2023, and totally by surprise.
