Coldplay’s Chris Martin recently talked about what’s in his stereo, Viva la Vida’s next single and the “Viva”-related lawsuits the band is currently facing. First, guitarist Joe Satriani sued the band, claiming their Grammy-winning “Viva La Vida” ripped off his instrumental “If I Could Fly.” More recently, Cat Stevens, or Yusuf, has chimed in, claiming Coldplay stole the melody for the song from his own “Foreigner Suite.” Still, all the legal woes don’t have Martin down. “Yeah, some people are suing us at the moment and although it was initially a bit depressing, now it’s become really inspiring,” Martin said.… Read more »

LOS ANGELES — Coldplay has denied in federal court that it copied parts of Joe Satriani’s music for its hit song, “Viva La Vida.” In a response filed in Los Angeles on Satriani’s song “lacks originality,” Coldplay’s response claims, and shouldn’t receive copyright protection. Satriani sued Coldplay in December, claiming the British band used “substantial, original portions” of Satriani’s “If I Could Fly,” which was released in 2004. Satriani’s lawyer, Howard E. King, said Coldplay’s response was typical for copyright infringement cases and he reiterated that he thought the matter could have been resolved without a lawsuit.
It’s probably safe to assume that Joe Satriani won’t be serving as Coldplay’s opening act when the band launches a North American tour this summer. On the eve of potentially racking up seven more Grammy awards, Coldplay has announced plans to hit the road in support of their latest opus, Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, for yet another leg of their already lengthy world tour–the boys depart for Japan and Australia immediately after their awards show pit stop.
