Sitting here in July, it’s important to reflect on the fact that Pride Month is now behind us, but the work that’s necessary is anything but. The reality is that Pride, AAPI Month, Black History Month, and Women’s History Month are useful in that they amplify issues for those that need them amplified. May is Asian American or Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month, and it would be terribly remiss of us to not cover that in this column.
Last year a report from USC brought to light that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders make up less than 6% of speaking roles in the entertainment industry and 4% of lead roles. The study looked at 13,000 popular films and found that of the 4% with AAPI leads, only 6 were women, 0 were women over 40, 0 were in the LGBTQ+ community, and 14 were Dwayne Johnson. As we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, there is a group of middle schoolers who are embracing their own heritage and making a difference. AAPI Youth Rising is about a year old and we have a feeling their work has only just begun. On their website, their mission statement reads:“AAPI Youth Rising is an organization founded by middle-schoolers. Our mission is to take small actions to make positive change in our communities.
