These days, the old west rail hub of Las Vegas, New Mexico, is little more than a dusty economic dead zone amid a boneyard of bare mesas. In national elections, the town overwhelmingly votes Democratic: More than 80 percent of all residents are Hispanic, and one in four lives below the poverty line. On February 5th, the day of the Super Tuesday caucus, a school-bus driver named Paul Maez arrived at his local polling station to cast his ballot. To his surprise, Maez found that his name had vanished from the list of registered voters, thanks to a statewide effort… Read more »
The second annual Center of the Universe on Hollywood Boulevard will feature three stages showcasing those DJs and others, including Sander Kleinenberg, DJ Sneak and Marques Wyatt. BT, whose profile rose this year after producing ‘NSYNC’s “Pop”, will be performing a rare live set, according to organizers. This year’s event will be held on seven city blocks between Vine Street and Whitley Avenue and is expected to draw 20,000 people, twice the number who turned out for last year’s Paul van Dyk-headlined festival. Dance music promoters Spundae are hosting the event, and profits will be donated to local youth charities.… Read more »
‘NSync was the top musical act at the seventh annual Blockbuster Entertainment Awards Tuesday (April 10) night at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium, winning Favorite CD (No Strings Attached), Favorite Single (“Bye, Bye, Bye”), and Favorite Pop Group. The major music categories were mostly split, however, with a poodle-haired Christina Aguilera snagging Favorite Female Artist, Eminem taking Favorite Male Artist, and Destiny’s Child walking off with Favorite Group of the Year. Pink and Nelly were the Favorite New Artists. The most movie-related wins were reaped by Charlie’s Angels with three (plus one for cast member Lucy Liu in Shanghai Noon). Kate Hudson’s… Read more »
It’s not FELICITY’s “Last Christmas” by any means, as they have released a cover of the Wham! classic just in time for the holidays. The single is out via Zodhiac Records and takes a grittier approach to the jolly, poppy track that the late George Michael put his mark on. Guitarist Drew Rapier says they wanted to put out a cover of their favorite Christmas song as a gift for their fans. “It’s one that we’ve always played acoustically at Christmas parties or for our families. We challenged ourselves to create a version of the song that is unique to… Read more »
FELICITY dabbles in nu-metal on their new single “Kill ‘Em All,” featuring rap-rockers Discrepancies, and released via Zodhiac Records. The song calls out hypocrisy and deception, which is highlighted in the bridge, “You need to drag us all down/Just to feel worth/But no one ever needed you/the truth hurts.” Opening with distorted vocals and a TV static-esque sound, the track goes straight into heavy rock riffs accompanied by a rap verse. The song runs under three minutes but captures a gritty and raw essence. Stitching together these sounds along with synths to slow it down, before revving up into an… Read more »
