Boy George is in more trouble with police after being accused of kidnap and assault. The 80’s star, who now DJ’s across Europe and the U.S., was arrested by London police on Saturday on suspicions of assault and false imprisonment after male escort Auden Carlsen fled from his east London flat after ‘fearing for his life’. Carlsen claims George chained him to a wall in his East London flat in the early hours of Saturday morning (April 28) after he was hired to pose for a series of racy photos. Speaking to a tabloid newspaper, Carlsen says, “George said he… Read more »
Among the legions of acts booked for this year’s South by Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival March 14-18 in Austin, here are 10 that people will be talking about. THE PIPETTES Sure, the Pipettes revel in the ’60s girl group sounds of the Ronettes and the Shangri-Las. And yes, they even conjure up cool memories of British sister-in-song, the beehived Mari Wilson, who covered similar musical ground in the ’80s. Still, the trio, who hail from the British seaside town of Brighton, manage to make songs like “Pull Shapes,” “Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me” and “Dirty Mind”… Read more »
Sometimes, being a fish out of water offers a more comprehensive view of the outside world. For the past two years, the Used’s frontman, Bert McCracken, has been living in Los Angeles, and while he hasn’t exactly been enamored with the city of artifice and entertainment, he has found the environment creatively inspiring. “I’ve had a good look at how people think in comparison to almost the whole rest of the world and it’s so ridiculous, it’s given me tons of song ideas,” the Utah native said. “I don’t even feel like a fish out of water here, I feel… Read more »
Some videos dazzle, some are dramatic, some are sexy, and some just make you go, “Huh?” Interpol’s “Evil” might leave you feeling all of the above – but you may never get a good night’s sleep again. “Oh, I hope it’s creepy,” said first-time video director Charlie White. “I intended for it to be two things: spooky and not too hip.” If your ideas of those two things agree with a clip that shows the aftermath of a horrible car crash and its effects on a strangely lifelike, shell-shocked puppet who busts some moves on a gurney, “Evil” is for… Read more »
The Beatnuts are one of those groups that are all about hip-hop. The New York City duo JuJu and Psycho Les are back with Milk Me, an album that stays true to what they started 10 years ago – creating pure, good hip-hop. The album’s first single for the streets, “Hot” featuring Greg Nice, is proof with a sick head-nodding horn beat that will give ‘Nuts fans exactly what they’ve been waiting for. ChartAttack recently spoke with producer/MC JuJu while at a gig in Toronto about staying true to his game and the current state of hip-hop. ChartAttack: You guys… Read more »
On Jan. 6, San Francisco’s Moscone convention center pulses with all the energy of a rock concert. A crowd sprinkled with hip-hop teenagers, digerati, and aging hippies streams in to hear the annual state-of-the-Mac keynote from Apple Computer Inc. Chief Executive Steven P. Jobs. Every facet of the event bears the fingerprints of the obsessive Jobs – right down to the music that fills the air. This year, it’s the King himself, Elvis Presley. Later, Jobs rolls the tape of Apple’s famous “1984” ad that ran on Super Bowl Sunday that year – and hasn’t been broadcast since. Only this… Read more »
Antonio “L.A.” Reid, who took the helm at Arista Records nearly four years ago and oversaw platinum successes from acts including OutKast, Pink and Avril Lavigne, has left the label, it was announced Tuesday. Reid became president and CEO of Arista in May 2000 after the company’s founder and CEO, Clive Davis, left because of parent company BMG’s mandatory retirement policy. Reid was not available to comment, according to an Arista spokeswoman. Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, chairman and CEO of BMG, called Reid “one of the music industry’s top record men.” “His passion for working with and developing some of the world’s… Read more »
