Billy Idol Is Back for More, More, More

New York – Few musicians can boast the level of success that Billy Idol attained in the ’80s and early ’90s. Unfortunately, the “live hard and die young” punk rock ethos doesn’t come with a middle-age survival guide. “When you’re young you never think you’ll be a 50-year-old rocking out with the young bands,” Idol told The Associated Press. That’s exactly what Idol, 49, hopes to be doing next year. The pop-punk patriarch has just released “Devil’s Playground,” his first full-length album since 1993’s unremarkable “Cyberpunk.” With five million-sellers already under his belt, Idol hopes “Playground” will return him to… Read more »

Good Charlotte takes off hamburger suits

Good Charlotte is ditching the vegetable costumes and getting serious in the clip for its new single, “We Believe.” In the video — shooting Friday at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre — the band takes the stage in an abandoned playhouse and performs the song while images of war and human suffering play on a movie screen behind it. It’s a far cry from the Fruit of the Loom antics Good Charlotte deployed for their last clip, but as director Sam Erickson explains, it was important to the band that the video stay loyal to the song’s serious themes. “We worked… Read more »

PETA Takes on J.Lo Over Fur Fashions

New York – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Jennifer Lopez to “Get Right” when it comes to fur. Lopez introduced her Sweetface collection during New York Fashion Week last month. “Please don’t support Jennifer Lopez or her bloody business,” according to a Web site that the animal rights group has devoted to the singer, actress and now fashion designer. “Many hot designers, including Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, Todd Oldham, Marc Bouwer, and others have… created synthetic alternatives that are hip, humane, and easily available and don’t turn animals into fashion victims.” Calls by The Associated Press to… Read more »

Epitaph Tour Is The Perfect Babysitter For Teenage Punks – Review

Anyone who thought that Epitaph Records passed their heyday when Rancid and NOFX split for new pastures would have been wide-eyed surprised on this evening. Kudos to the keepers of the punk rock flag for progressing with the times and developing – yet again – into a leader of the pack. They used to lead the way in the likes of skate-punk and crust, but as the plethora of pre-teens proved, punk rock still hasn’t kicked the bucket. It’s just changed boots. Kicking off the show, new label additions Scatter The Ashes dealt a relatively heavy blow with their brand… Read more »

Music Rights Societies Giving Heirs Their Share

New York – Have you ever wondered who actually reads the obituaries page in your daily newspaper? One answer – a running joke in New York – is a renter who wants to find an apartment. But who else would tear out obits from The New York Times and take them to work? One regular obit reader is Gary Roth, assistant VP of legal and business affairs for performing rights at Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) in New York. He is one of the society’s executives who deals with royalties payable to the heirs of deceased songwriters. Tracking heirs entitled to… Read more »

50 Cent And The Game – Doomed From The Very Beginning?

You know the saying “you’re always the last to know”? On Monday evening, radio listeners in New York were privy to news that the G-Unit were severing ties with the Game before he even knew. Late that afternoon, Game had been a guest of Hot 97’s Angie Martinez and downplayed the rumors of problems between himself and 50 Cent. Simultaneously, 50 and the rest of the G-Unit were telling a different story on rival station Power 105.1. “Where does he stand with your camp?” Power 105.1’s Ed Lover asked 50. “Across the street or around the corner,” he answered. “He’s… Read more »

Kasabian Send Out The Attack Dogs

Kasabian Rock’s back pages are littered with tall tales and weird stories about murder and mayhem. Everyone’s heard the one about the woman murdered while the Ohio Players recorded “Love Rollercoaster,” her blood-curdling scream inadvertently making it into the final mix; of Charles Manson’s dalliances with the Beach Boys; or the backwards messages in Judas Priest songs that made middle-American teenagers kill themselves. Well, here’s another one – while recording their self-titled debut in a rural farmhouse, U.K. electro-rock troupe Kasabian whiled away their evenings of pastoral isolation with bloody killing sprees. True story. Well, sort of. “There were shitloads… Read more »

Lopez MTV Special Sprinkled With Bling

New York – Jennifer Lopez didn’t let MTV delve as deeply as they do into the lives of “Newlyweds” Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey or the Osbourne family, but she did let the cameras capture her stressing out over her sparkly New York Fashion Week debut – and one itty-bitty tantrum. “Jennifer Lopez: Beyond the Runway,” the hour-long docu-special that airs Thursday night (10 p.m. EST), is mostly drama-free. Unlike the Osbournes’ screaming matches or a fit by Simpson, most of the conflict is over bling and color. Six months before the show, Lopez worries her designers won’t come up… Read more »

Sum 41: Survive For The Rocking

Just like everything that surrounds Sum 41, Chuck, the band’s fourth full-length album, has an outlandish story behind it. Last May, the group of 20-somethings were in the Congo, doing the charitable rock star thing by filming a documentary for War Child Canada about the civil war there, which has claimed over three million lives. In the midst of their altruistic act, the band suddenly found themselves in the midst of a serious violent outbreak as gun-fighting and bombs began falling just outside of their hotel. We caught up with Dave “Brown Sound” Baksh to talk a bit about dodging… Read more »

Alexisonfire: Popular Enough To Move Out Of Parents' House

Alexisonfire inherited the screamo crown of Canada this year, knocking it right off the emotionally hardcore heads of their peers. Their sophomore disc, Watch Out!, which the band describes as sounding like “two Catholic high-school girls in mid-knife-fight,” went gold in under three months, even though the band received little radio play. We caught up with lead screamer George Pettit to talk about the finer points of fronting the band and how his success is finally allowing him the chance to move out of his parents’ house. ChartAttack: You guys have had a crazy-good year. Has the success been any… Read more »
