9 Songs We Hope To Hear At When We Were Young

Everyone has that one song they hope to hear from their favorite band at a live show. Sometimes we get lucky and our favorite track is one of their hits, other times our favorite track isn’t as popular. Perhaps a b-side that rarely gets any love on the stage or a tune from an older album that hasn’t seen a spot in the setlist in years. A festival with a line-up as stacked as When We Were Young, there is potential for a load of surprises. Bands and artists tend to get a little weird as festivals. We crafted a… Read more »

5 Modern Bands Revitalizing The Riot grrrl Movement

The Riot grrrl movement began in the early 1990’s at the forefront of feminism, punk music, and political commentary. It was a genre built out of anger, frustration, and rage entirely crafted by badass women. These women aimed to express emotions considered acceptable for male songwriters at the time, but far less common for women. Growing out of the Pacific Northwest but quickly spreading across the country, acts like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney paved the way for many bands to come in the future. Speaking on topics like sexual assault, domestic abuse, anarchism, and female empowerment, the movement was much… Read more »

11 New-Age Protest Songs To Listen To This 4th of July

For Americans across the nation, this July 4th might not feel like one worth celebrating. June 30, mere days ago, the Supreme Court of the United States made three major rulings, which, in short, overturned affirmative action, halted President Joe Biden’s plans to cancel student debt, and legalized discrimination against LGBTQIA+ individuals. Additionally, last year at this time, SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade, setting abortion rights back by decades. Refer back, even further, to 2020 to see the federal government’s botched response to the COVID-19 pandemic, unchecked police power used against marginalized communities, and more. So, truly, it is well… Read more »

Black to the Future: Picking Up the Torch

Often, when we celebrate Black History Month we think about the Civil Rights leaders and activists of long ago. I remember being in elementary school and feeling like racism was a thing of the past because of the way it was taught. It would be great if we could just talk about social injustices as something that happened long ago but no longer. However, the fact that just this weekend I saw a “White Lives Matter” shirt at an event, means that people still aren’t understanding. All of February, we see quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.… Read more »
