Touring and promotion company Live Nation Inc said on Monday it has elected Michael Cohl as chairman of its board, effective immediately. Cohl, who was previously vice chairman of the company’s board, will continue in his role as chairman and chief executive of Live Nation Artists. Live Nation said Cohl is credited with developing the concept of ‘global’ touring and aftermarket tour revenue opportunities such as books, television shows, videos and merchandise.
Concert touring company Live Nation on Thursday said it reached a two-year, multimillion dollar, worldwide touring deal with tween rockers Jonas Brothers. Live Nation caused a stir in October when it lured pop star Madonna from her long-term music label Warner Brothers with an estimated $120 million multi-album, touring and merchandising global partnership. The Los Angeles-based company said the deal calls for the band, comprised of three siblings from New Jersey, to play more than 140 theatres and arenas around the world. If Madonna leaves Warner Bros. for an all-encompassing $120 million deal with Live Nation — as the Wall Street Journal reported this week — the concert promoter will struggle to make money on the deal, according to a Billboard analysis of the numbers. The 10-year deal reportedly includes: $50 million in cash and stock for the right to promote Madonna’s concert tours; a signing bonus of $17.5 million; and advances totaling $50 million-$60 million for three albums. Live Nation is now in the live Maroon 5 business. And not just for one tour. Billboard has learned that the promoter has not only cut a deal to produce rock act Maroon 5’s 28-city fall arena tour, but both parties have also committed to a full-blown Live Nation amphitheater tour for summer 2008. Maroon 5 will play at least 60 shows under the Live Nation banner by the end of next year.
