Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Feels “Back To Normal” After Pneumonia

Deryck Whibley 2023

Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley has shared a new statement admitting that he is now feeling “back to normal” following a hospital stay. Last month Deryck was admitted due to pneumonia, which his wife Ariana updated people about. Her original post on Instagram read, “Deryck and I were suppose to be in Chicago right now, celebrating our eight-year wedding anniversary. But the universe had a different plan for us. We spent the entire night in the ER and will now be spending the next few days here in the hospital as he fights through pneumonia. The scariest part is that there is a lot of strain on his heart and they are telling us that there is a possibility of heart failure.”

A few days later, she was about to offer a positive update, revealing that Deryck had been released. She wrote, “I’m very happy to be giving this update. Deryck was discharged after responding so well to his treatments. He is now under the care of his mother, who is a registered nurse and myself.

“The pressure and strain on his heart and lungs has improved, and he is able to breathe without as much pain. I can’t tell you how truly grateful we are for the community around us. We knew we had support, but the outpouring of love for our family has been absolutely overwhelming, and we can’t begin to say how much it has meant to us and helped us stay positive through this.”

Throughout this stressful event, the band also released the first single off their upcoming final album Heaven :x: Hell. That came in the form of “Landmines“. A song that returns to the very beginning of the band’s story and channels it effortlessly. An awful lot going on. So Deryck has deemed it right to give an update himself on what has been going on.

In a video posted to the Sum 41 socials, he says, “I’m back. I feel fantastic, I feel great. I want to thank you for all the love and support and messages and comments. But I feel amazing. I feel back to normal. I’m excited for When We Were Young. I’m excited to get back on stage and I feel ready.”

He continues, detailing a little bit of what actually happened:

“I was feeling a little sick on the last few days of the Offspring and Simple Plan tour. Then we went straight from that tour to shoot the “Landmines” video, and on the first day, I felt pretty sick. On the second day of that shoot, I felt even worse. Then I went home and just kept getting worse and worse.”

“I tested for COVID, and sure enough, I had COVID, and it hit me really hard.”

“I ended up in the hospital for a few days, and that was a little scary. But I got out and with the help of my mom, who is a nurse, and my wife Ariana, I was in good hands.”

Finally, he shares what he has been doing to get himself ready to hit the stage again, stating, “The last few days I have been in the gym. I’ve been on the bike, I’ve been on the treadmill, I’ve been on the elliptical, and I feel fucking fantastic.”

It’s incredible news and a welcome relief to hear Deryck feeling himself again. Now, we can’t wait to see what the band have got up their sleeve for When We Were Young. idobi are going to be there all weekend, by the way, so make sure you’re tuned in!
