Rise Rock n’ Shine Presents: Brooke Alexx’s New Breakup Anthem “Downplay”

The dating scene is rough, y’all. We’re sure this doesn’t come as news to you (or maybe it does, in which case, teach us your ways). In a world of Tinder, ghosting, and something called breadcrumbing, there’s still one sting that hurts worse than all others: the ex you can’t get over.

If you’re in these feels, never fear! Brooke Alexx has penned a song for this exact situation. “I wrote “Downplay” on the final day of my writing trip to LA last year,” she says. “I hadn’t written anything I’d loved yet and wasn’t expecting too much of my last session…”

Just because you’re hurting doesn’t mean you should open old wounds. In your weakest moments, “Downplay” will give you the strength to keep their number blocked. Sometimes you gotta fake it till you make it and with this song as your soundtrack, that doesn’t seem so bad. “I knew soon into the write that this song was special. I think I even said, ‘this is my next single.’”

It doesn’t hurt that “Downplay” is accompanied by a music video that screams women power. With three dancers at her side, the girls are having a blast and their energy is contagious. “I love having backup dancers be a part of my live shows and I take dance classes for fun at Millenium, so it just made sense to incorporate dance into the video,” Brooke explains.  It makes the video feel like a night in with your best girl friends, the ones who will bring ice cream and remind you that you’re a queen.

From the song to the dancers to the aesthetically pleasing apartment itself, everything about “Downplay” is a heartbreak cure. You’ll sing, you’ll laugh, you’ll dance, and most of all, you’ll feel seen. It’s “Single Ladies” 2020 and you’re all invited to come get down.

Fun fact about “Downplay”:

  • “I love having my hands on every part of the creative process. I created all the promotional materials and directed and edited the music video myself. I think having that kind of control helps keep the brand and vision consistent across the board!”
