American hip-hop and R&B singer and rapper Akon pleaded not guilty to minor criminal charges onMonday after being accused of tossing a teenage fan off the stage during a concert in upstate New York earlier this year. The singer, who also goes by Aliaune Thiam and was partly raised in Senegal, faces misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and harassment. Verizon really didn’t want to see Akon “Smack That.” The communications company scrapped its partnership with the 25-year-old rapper Friday after a video was released that shows him simulating sex onstage with an underage girl during an Apr.12 concert in Trinidad. According to various accounts, 15-year-old Danah Alleyne thought she had won a dance contest when she was invited to dance with Akon, but soon found out that first prize was a close encounter with the Konvicted rapper. Recently-signed band Dakona, currently hard at work on their debut album for Maverick Recording Company, will take a break from recording to headline a benefit concert to help teen suicide prevention. The event takes place May 26th at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, just outside of New York City. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Mental Health Association of Westchester, NY, Teen Suicide Prevention Program.
