Blink-182 announces summer tour

If it hadn’t been for drummer Travis Barker’s near-fatal airplane crash last year, Blink-182 might not be touring this summer. But after a five-year hiatus, the rock trio — Barker, Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge — will embark on a nearly 50-date North American arena and amphitheater tour, beginning July 24th at the Joint in Las Vegas and wrapping October 3rd at the Borgata Events Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The trek will feature support on various dates from Weezer, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, All-American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday, Asher Roth and Chester French. “My goal… Read more »

Green Day ditches punk on 'Breakdown'

Green Day has been delivering power-punk to the mainstream  since Billie Joe Armstrong clutched a monkey in “Longview” nearly 15 years ago.   The trio has done it all with one foot firmly entrenched in its hometown East Bay punk scene, stating its allegiance to gutter punks and Gilman Street at every possible chance. It’s been both a blessing and a curse, eternally indebted to the past, but inching ever closer to the future. With the reigning punk royalty out of the picture the past couple years, the number of punk releases declined sharply. Anyone hoping Green Day would bring… Read more »

Brian Wood Interview

Miguel Tenicela spoke with Brian Wood and some of the illustrators he has collaborated with at the 2009 New York Comic Convention. How did you first get the idea to start writing comic books and graphic novels? In college, when I first started reading them, which was when I was about 25 years old. I was in art school, and I decided I wanted to draw comics… I hadn’t yet thought of myself as a writer. That came later, when I realized I didn’t know anyone I wanted to work with, or that I trusted to write my ideas, so… Read more »

Fans demand hard facts in Brown-Rihanna case

The news about Chris Brown’s alleged assault on girlfriend Rihanna has clearly touched a nerve with the public. The range of emotions runs the gamut, from those agreeing that Rihanna should not be made a scapegoat in this saga, to others begging for a story about how, “media commonly condemns celebs before all the facts are out or before they have been convicted.” Brown, 19, turned himself in and was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats in the incident, though the District Attorney’s office kicked the case back to the police on Wednesday asking for more evidence. There were… Read more »

Judges Scheme to Jail Youths for Profit

At worst, Hillary Transue thought she might get a stern lecture when she appeared before a judge for building a spoof MySpace page mocking the assistant principal at her high school in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She was a stellar student who had never been in trouble, and the page stated clearly at the bottom that it was just a joke. Instead, the judge sentenced her to three months at a juvenile detention center on a charge of harassment. She was handcuffed and taken away as her stunned parents stood by. “I felt like I had been thrown into some surreal sort… Read more »

Blink-182 fans skeptical of reunion talks

Throughout the week, we’ve been posting segments of our interview with Mark Hoppus. In part one, he spoke about reconnecting with his estranged bandmate, Tom DeLonge, and the possibilities of a full-blown Blink-182 reunion. In part two, he revealed plans for a solo album and said his other band, +44, is pretty much finished. And while Hoppus has done most of the talking, we’ve also been hearing plenty from you too. Seems you’ve had plenty to say – not just about a reunited Blink, but about the end of +44 and the prospects of a Hoppus solo album. So we’ve… Read more »

30GB Zunes Killing Themselves In Droves

The internet is awash with reports that the 30GB Zune is committing suicide across the planet. Not just one of them, either. It seems that some weird bug is simultaneously causing the music players to kill themselves, like lemmings leaping from a cliff. While the Zune is a distant also-ran in the MP3 market, which is dominated by Apple’s, the Microsoft-made device has gained critical approbation with its most recent, version 3.0 models, whose features are quite competitive with the iPod line. Many users appreciate the player’s built-in FM radio and “Zune Social” features, which facilitate the communal sharing and… Read more »

Music tax faces strong opposition

The industry gets upset when anyone calls this a “tax” so I’ll use the “voluntary license” term, even though tax is much more accurate. A true voluntary license wouldn’t require everyone having a certain provider to opt-in, but that’s exactly what this plan would require. In fact, as the slides indicate, eventually it would basically require all ISPs to “opt-in” forcing all of their members to “opt-in.” Suddenly, everyone has to pay. That’s not a voluntary license. It’s a tax. However, even if we step back and pretend it’s really a voluntary license, and even if we grant the premise… Read more »

Stars Welcome Bronx Mowgli Wentz

As news of Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson’s new baby, Bronx Mowgli, makes the rounds, friends of the couple have been reaching out to MTV News to share their congratulations, well wishes and, um, babysitting offers. “I woke up to the news this morning, I couldn’t be more elated, I cried like a pussy,” Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy said in an e-mail. “I know how excited Pete and Ash have been [in] anticipation of this moment. Uncle Travie’s ready to babysit the little guy, he’s gonna be the greatest rapper alive by age 5 if I have my… Read more »

Blink-182 Reunion in the Cards?

Last week, at the mtvU Woodie Awards, former Blink-182er (and current member of +44) Mark Hoppus spoke about his best friend and bandmate Travis Barker, who is recovering from second-and-third degree burns suffered in a September 19 plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured DJ AM. And this week, Hoppus kept on talking – er, blogging – only this time it wasn’t just about about Barker, but former Blink bandmate Tom DeLonge, too. Seems that, for the first time since Blink went on “indefinite hiatus” in February 2005, all three members have been spending time together … which,… Read more »
