Following their departure from FEVER 333 in 2022, guitarist Stephen Harrison and drummer Aric Improta are back to share their new project, House Of Protection. “It’s Supposed To Hurt” marks their debut and is produced by ex-Bring Me The Horizon‘s Jordan Fish. — As UK music festivals go, the Phoenix Festival doesn’t have the storied history of Glastonbury or Reading. It only ran for five years, between 1993 and ’97, but it was located pretty close to my home in the Midlands region of England when I was growing up, and so I went to the 1995 event and the two that followed. The 1996 Phoenix Festival is the festival that I judge all festivals on. Sunday night marked the 25th annual Video Music Awards and there were few surprises as MTV pretended that music is the network’s number one priority for one evening.
As Portishead finished its meticulously sparse evening performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the typically reticent Beth Gibbons suddenly leapt off the stage and ran a 100-yard dash along the fenced-in crowd, exuberantly shaking their hands. Percussionist Geoff Barrow and guitarist Adrian Utley soon exited more quietly. Barrow, though, paused in front of a microphone to say, simply, “Thanks for waiting.” After a ten-year hiatus, Portishead is back. EMI Group Plc played down chances of an attempt to merge or sell its business on Friday, saying it was more convinced than ever it was best off alone despite a rapidly shrinking music industry.
