LONDON – A line up such as this is rarely seen in the UK. Brand New, Thrice and Glassjaw are three bands that have never achieved mainstream success, but each has such a following that it only made sense that they would perform at the Wembley Arena.
There was one truth apparent while walking through the merchandise area one hour after the doors opened at the Starland Ballroom last Wednesday evening: the crowd was ready for all that was to come.
This year is a milestone for the Vans Warped Tour, as the hard rocking fest enters its tenth year of carrying the post-punk banner. Footage of some of last year’s touring bands – including the Used, the Ataris, Sum 41, Glassjaw, Pennywise, Rancid, Thrice and Less Than Jake – will be included on Vans Warped Tour ’03, a DVD due on June 22nd. The Lostprophets are preparing for the release of Start Something, the successor to the group’s 2001 independently released, The Fake Sound of Progress. The new Lostprophets album is produced by Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Good Charlotte) and features the first single, “Last Train Home,” which was the unexpected #1 most added track at modern rock radio this week and #2 most added at the active rock format. A Static Lullaby are a California-based hard rock band that are hard to categorize. Sometimes fitting into in the emo or punk category and dabbling with shrill screams and metal guitars, the group’s influences are equally based in hardcore and emotional melodic music, teetering o n the brink of brutality while acknowledging their sensitive side. Members of Glassjaw, the Used, Less Than Jake, Mest and Story of the Year sat down on couches in the New Media lounge of Warner Bros. Records and shot their fans Wednesday morning. The shootings came in plain sight of a roomful of people via the Xbox Live, and the bands’ respective fans shot back. Using headsets to communicate with each other, the band members wound through the cobblestone paths of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, making the occasional open plea for advice, like “How do you survive the rocket blasts? It was as if the tattooed hand of a punk rock god reached down and anointed Andrew W.K. The hard partying rocker was enthusiastically playing his anthem “I Get Wet” as the skies opened up and a torrential downpour put an early end to the eighth stop on this year’s Vans Warped Tour.
