Judges Scheme to Jail Youths for Profit

At worst, Hillary Transue thought she might get a stern lecture when she appeared before a judge for building a spoof MySpace page mocking the assistant principal at her high school in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She was a stellar student who had never been in trouble, and the page stated clearly at the bottom that it was just a joke. Instead, the judge sentenced her to three months at a juvenile detention center on a charge of harassment. She was handcuffed and taken away as her stunned parents stood by. “I felt like I had been thrown into some surreal sort… Read more »

Amazon.com Inc., pushing further into the digital distribution of books, unveiled a thinner and faster version of its Kindle electronic-book reader but raised controversy among publishers and others with a new text-reading feature. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos displays the Kindle 2 e-book reader at an event Monday. “Our vision is every book ever printed in any language all available in 60 seconds,” said Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos at a Monday press conference in a New York library. The Seattle company also said it has a new work by best-selling novelist Stephen King, called “Ur,” which will be available exclusively… Read more »

Blink's influence resonates in rock community

In between the raunchy humor and nudity, Blink-182 managed to make a huge impact on other bands and devoted fans. Perhaps without even knowing it – and definitely without ever really trying – Blink-182 have somehow become one of the most influential bands of the past 20 years. This might seem like a bit of a stretch. After all, aren’t these the same guys with the discography of di– jokes? The ones who gave their albums titles like “Enema of the State or Take Off Your Pants and Jacket?” Well, yes. But they’re also the same guys who featured Robert… Read more »

BURBANK, Calif. –  Premier pop powerhouse Jack’s Mannequin has confirmed their first worldwide tour of the new year in support of their critically-lauded sophomore Sire/Warner Bros. Records album, “The Glass Passenger.” “One doesn’t have to know McMahon’s back stories or relationship status to relate to his music — and that’s what makes ‘The Glass Passenger’ a fantastic, special album,”  Alternative Press Magazine noted. The tour will kick off Down Under in Australia this month before moving across the U.K. and Europe, and will touch down in the U.S. in early April through late May. “The Resolution,” the current single and… Read more »

As Rolling Stone first predicted in December 2008, Phish will headline two nights at this year’s Bonnaroo Music Festival, with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band also topping the bill. Roller skating causes emotional scars for Perry

Katy Perry is talking about boys again. But this time around, it’s pretty clear she’s not opening up about her split from Gym Class Heroes singer Travis McCoy Perry revealed at a concert in L.A. this weekend that she first started learning about the opposite sex at a roller-skating rink. “I used to never even be able to see a boy,” the Grammy nominee said to a packed house at the Wiltern “I didn’t even know what a boy was. They were so foreign to me. I used to go roller-skating just so I could see the opposite sex.” And… Read more »

Gabe Saporta on drinking, surgery, new album

Three years ago, Cobra Starship weren’t even a band. Two years ago, they weren’t one either, but at least things were beginning to happen. Gabe Saporta – tired of watching his band Midtown being mired in the major-label quagmire – began writing songs on his own, under the name of Cobra Starship (apparently borrowed from a brand of vintage jackets). Somewhere along the way, he got tapped to write the theme song for the Samuel L. Jackson flick “Snakes on a Plane,” which became the first official Cobra release. Since then, they’ve released two full-lengths, kicked out a keytar player… Read more »
