Music Downloads Double in 2006, Fail to Offset Piracy


A surge in downloaded songs and mobile-phone ringtones failed to make up for declines in sales of compact discs last year, an industry group said. Music downloads almost doubled to about $2 billion last year, accounting for about 10 percent of the industry’s global sales, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said in a statement today. Band Buys Trees to Offset Tour Emissions


Pearl Jam are buying trees to make up for their tour. Pearl Jam has cut a deal with Conservation International to buy a 1,400 square-mile area of rainforest in Madagascar. The band has figured out their tour will create 5,700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s from the trucks, buses and airplanes that will move their tour through its 30,000 mile route, plus the 1 million fans who will drive to see them. Clear Channel Sets Stones Tickets Offer


Rolling Stones fans who want first dibs on seats for the group’s North American tour will get satisfaction from an advance-purchase offer tied to the road show, concert promoter, Clear Channel Entertainment said on Tuesday. Clear Channel has teamed up with music retail chain Sam Goody to launch “getAccess,” a rewards program that allows fans to buy two tickets for one show on the tour, which begins on Sept. 5 in Boston.
