Ludacris, Avril Lavigne and Disturbing tha Peace will perform during the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards Opening Act, the precursor to the actual awards show on August 29th at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. The latest group of performers joins an already long list of main event acts, including Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Eminem, the Hives, Sheryl Crow, Ja Rule and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. Brandy, Usher, Linkin Park and P.O.D. have been added to the cast of presenters. Saturday Night Live’s Jimmy Fallon, who releases The Bathroom Wall on August 27th, will host.

Even though a bum knee kept singer Julian Casablancas from performing with his band on select dates of Weezer’s Enlightenment Tour, the Strokes will be back on their collective feet October 1 when they kick off a two-month victory lap around North America. The seventh edition of Epitaph Records’ “Punk-O-Rama” compilation series will be released June 25 and feature 19 tracks from the likes of Rancid, Bad Religion, NOFX, Pennywise, the Hives, and Bouncing Souls. Following the series’ modus operandi, “Punk-O-Rama Vol. 7” will be specially priced at $5.98. For his next musical offering, Steven Tyler will be singing about slinging. Tyler and his Aerosmith bandmates are contributing their version of the “Theme From Spider-Man” (“Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can…”) to the soundtrack for the live-action feature, according to a Columbia Records spokesperson. The LP, composed of tracks exclusive to the soundtrack as well as previously released album cuts, is set for release April 30. Sum41’s recently recorded studio version of “What We’re All About” will serve as the soundtrack’s first single. Sony’s “Spider-Man” soundtrack, due April 30, has snared Aerosmith to cover the film’s main theme, Billboard.com has learned. The set also features first single “What We’re All About (The Original Version)” by Sum 41 and second single “Hero,” performed by Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, Saliva vocalist Josey Scott, Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, and Theory Of A Dead Man guitarist Tyler Connolly.
