Sun Records rocks again with new documentary, album

Sam Phillips demurs when it’s suggested that rock ‘n’ roll was invented at his Sun Records label during the 1950s. But he does acknowledge there was a whole lotta shakin’ going on in Memphis thanks to the music he created there with the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and others. “I do know this – it changed the world and it opened up a lot of doors,” Phillips said in a recent interview. “I’m happy we were able to contribute, at least in my opinion, to what music has done and is… Read more »

Rob Thomas Doesn't Expect Guest Vocalists On New Santana Album

Carlos Santana is hard at work on the follow-up to his 1999 mega-seller Supernatural, but Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas-who co-wrote and sang on that album’s Grammy-winning single, “Smooth”-says the guitar legend is taking a different path on this outing. Thomas, who’s helping Santana write a couple of songs for the album, said that rather than featuring a bunch of guest singers as Supernatural did, the new album will focus more on the Santana band. “I can’t imagine him doing the exact same thing again,” he says. “He has two unbelievably talented vocalists that are with his band, a guy… Read more »

Lifehouse faces brief career – Review

Lifehouse recorded what’s being called the most-played number on radio this year, the lovesick “Hanging by a Moment.” But the L.A.-based pop/rock band brings so little to the table in the way of originality and execution, as witnessed at the first of two sold-out El Rey gigs on Friday, that it’s unlikely the band will be able to build much on the success of that tune. Group’s melodramatic songs bear striking similarities to those of Pennsylvania’s Live and Florida’s Matchbox Twenty, though lacking the lyrical depth of the former and without the songwriting smoothness of the latter. Nearly each entry… Read more »

Lenny Kravitz Wanted To Get Mick Jagger Rocking On New Track

Fans have been getting their first taste of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger’s upcoming solo album recently via “God Gave Me Everything,” a track he co-wrote and performs with Lenny Kravitz. Kravitz, who also collaborated on Jagger’s 1993 effort Wandering Spirit, tells LAUNCH that his idea was to give Jagger a chance to rock out on the album. “It’s a rockin’ tune, and I wanted to hear him really upbeat again,” Kravitz says. “It was great working with him-he’s a genius. We work together well. It keeps me on my toes, ’cause it’s, like, ‘Hey, it’s Mick Jagger.’ I don’t… Read more »

Mick Jagger Finds A Muse In Britney Spears

“Mick Jagger Influenced By Britney Spears!” – a headline from the Weekly World News, home to stories about boy/bat hybrids and 200 lb. babies born with Hitler moustaches? Nope. The Rolling Stones’ frontman is recording his fourth solo album, tentatively scheduled for release this fall, and it looks like the LP will offer some interesting surprises, one of which was inspired by teen pop’s reigning diva. “Mick’s daughter purchased the Britney Spears record, and Mick apparently heard Spears’ version of his song ‘Satisfaction’ through the walls of her bedroom,” said Courtney Barnes, publicist for Rodney Jerkins, who produced the track.… Read more »

Train's Hit Was An Afterthought

The members of Train must have thought they were dreaming when bandmate Pat Monahan called them late last summer about a new track that had popped into his head. “We had made our record already, and we were all back home, and Pat called and said, ‘Man, you have to hear these lyrics I came up with,’” recalls drummer Scott Underwood. “I guess he woke up from a dream and had the song and the melody and a whole concept in his head. The next thing you know, we’re all listening to Pat’s demo tape of that song, and it… Read more »
