The 9:30 Club just hit the trifecta, winning the top three national awards for nightclubs in as many months. The latest: the 9:30 Club has been named Nightclub of the Year by the POLLSTAR Concert Industry Awards. Amy Winehouse and Paul McCartney set their recent troubles aside to steal the show Wednesday at the Brit Awards, the British music industry’s most prestigious prizes. Rockers Foo Fighters and British bands Take That and Arctic Monkeys were all double winners at Britain’s equivalent of the Grammys. Although she wasn’t up for any awards, troubled retro-soul diva Winehouse received a rapturous reception when she appeared to perform “Valerie” with Mark Ronson. Music management groups representing some of Britain’s biggest acts are seeking a share of the proceeds from concert tickets re-sold over the Internet on Web sites like eBay, Viagogo and Seat Exchange. But they are likely to face stiff resistance from the sites, one of which has argued that such a levy would effectively mean paying an artist twice for the same ticket. Management organizations behind more than 400 performers, including Robbie Williams, the Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead, aim to unite the live music industry in a new Resale Rights Society that would license the unregulated secondary ticket market. A British band has funded its first album entirely via a new Web site which allows up-and-coming acts to bypass record labels and gives fans the chance to buy into their success. McFly’s latest double a-side “Baby Come Back/Transylvania” has put an end to Beyonce and Shakira’s three-week run at the top of the Official UK Top 40, while landing the young pop-rock act their seventh No. 1 single. The track debuts ahead of “Beautiful Liar” which drops to two, while Akon’s “Don’t Matter” jumps up eight spots to three. Despite taking a 58-percent drop in sales during its second week in stores, Avril Lavigne’s The Best Damn Thing remains the nation’s top-selling LP, scanning more than 121,600 copies to hold onto the peak position on Billboard’s albums chart. Sultry R&B crooner Joe debuts at a distant #2, having sold 98,000 copies of his latest outing, Ain’t Nothin’ Like Me.
