Rolling Stone And 'N Sync Make History

Rolling Stone magazine is publishing six separate, simultaneous covers of the world’s biggest band, ‘N Sync, to coincide with the release of their new album, Celebrity. It marks the first time in the pop culture magazine’s 34 years that it has celebrated a band in this manner. Five of the covers feature “Brady-esque” portraits of the members of ‘N Sync, which will travel to newsstands, supermarkets, bookstores and other destinations where single copies are sold. The sixth cover is a limited edition group shot of the band available exclusively to subscribers. “We decided on vibrant, candy-colored backgrounds to project the… Read more »

Critics Attack Parental Advisory Stickers At Senate Hearing

Thanks to a uniform labeling system, you know what you’re getting into when you unwrap a candy bar, stick of gum or even the legendarily mysterious Twinkie. A CD bearing a parental advisory label, however, gives no description of what potentially offensive offerings lie within. That was the main concern of Senators Fred Thompson (R-Tennessee) and Joseph Lieberman (D-Connecticut), among others, at Wednesday’s Senate Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on the effectiveness of rating systems used by the entertainment industry. Though album stickers warn of “explicit content,” they don’t explain exactly what kind of content – violent, sexual or otherwise –… Read more »

Review: 'N Sync On Overblown Odyssey

It is a visual overload, this PopOdyssey tour starring the reigning champs of the pop music marketplace, ‘N Sync. There are films and explosions and dancers and mechanical bulls and more costumes than songs – it looks exhausting for performer and young viewer alike. It’s a feast of production values, a sign that every dime went into something the audience can see and, taken collectively, the show is a better marketing tool than a dozen videos. PopOdyssey is flat-out a vehicle to expose new songs to their hard-core audience and give a dynamic and visceral association to the bulk of… Read more »

Review: Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray

Newport Beach doesn’t raise no quitters. Sugar Ray first presented themselves in 1995 as horn-dog pop funksters with Lemonade and Brownies and were roundly ignored. Floored appeared two years later with a gloss of self-parodying Swingers hip, and the lilting “Fly” took wing, planting band mouthpiece Mark McGrath’s chiseled cheekbones and parti-colored hair in front of every camera or mike that would pause long enough to listen to him joshingly appreciate his group’s success. Having been tagged nobodies and one-hit wonders, Sugar Ray got both mad and even, releasing 14:59 – their position on the clock of fleeting fame –… Read more »
