Courtney Love Sues Nirvana


Courtney Love filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group, Geffen Records, the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic – and Nirvana L.L.C., a partnership formed in 1997 to manage the affairs of Nirvana, in a Los Angeles Superior Court on September 28th. The suit cites three causes of action, including declaratory relief, asking that the contract between Nirvana and Geffen be recinded and that all rights pertaining to Nirvana revert to Love, and breach of contract for an undisclosed amount. Hip-Hop Group Yanks Album Cover Depicting WTC Blast


Striking a macabre note, a new album cover by hip-hop band The Coup – whose music has a strong anti-capitalist bent – had until recently depicted the World Trade Center exploding, the band’s label said on Wednesday. “We changed the artwork as soon as we saw what had happened,” said Daria Kelly, director of sales for 75 Ark, the band’s label. Tragedy May Force Recall Of New Dream Theater Album


The hard rock band Dream Theater and EastWest Records are putting together a plan for how to deal with the group’s new concert album, Live Scenes From New York, which came out Tuesday (September 11). The album’s cover depicts the World Trade Center towers, the Statue Of Liberty, and the New York skyline engulfed by flames. Sony Music Lays Off 50


Sony Music, home of Jennifer Lopez and Destiny’s Child, has trimmed about 50 jobs from its North American workforce, in what a company spokesman termed a minorretooling of the major label group’s 6,500-strong staff. The cuts, which primarily affected administrative staff, include a handful of layoffs in several units, among them the Sony Classical and Loud Records rap label divisions, as well as Sony Music’s Nashville office and its Boston distribution arm. Smashing Pumpkins 'Greatest Hits' Coming This Fall


In the Fall of 2001, Virgin Records will release the long awaited Smashing Pumpkins “Greatest Hits” album. The tracks for the compilation are currently being selected by the band. To coincide with this release, Virgin will also release a two-CD package (limited edition) that will include the “Greatest Hits” disc as well as “Judas O Riley.” “Judas O Riley” is the follow-up to “Pisces Iscariot,” the 1994 b-sides release by the Pumpkins, and will include b-sides and rarities culled from the band’s sessions, which produced “Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,” “Adore,” and “MACHINA/the machines of God.” The artwork for… Read more »

German electronic music guru Paul Van Dyk is set to follow up the success of 2000’s Out There and Back with his first-ever mix CD this fall. 'Glitter' Release Date Delayed


Nearly two weeks after Mariah Carey’s emotional and physical breakdown, the studio releasing her new movie has announced that the release date has been pushed back to next month. “Glitter,” which stars Carey as an aspiring pop singer, was to open Aug. 31. But 20th Century Fox said Monday it would now open Sept. 21. Studios delay release dates regularly. The Cranberries Brew Up 'Wake Up And Smell The Coffee'


The Cranberries are gearing up to release their fifth studio album, “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee,” due from MCA Records on October 23rd. Legislators Seeking Web-Music Fee Cap


Capitol Hill politicians supportive of getting tunes flowing on the Internet are expected to push legislation Thursday ordering music companies to offer the same price when cutting various deals with Web denizens. Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.), whose home state includes tech giant AOL Time Warner, is slated to hold an early morning press conference detailing the bill, which is being co-sponsored by Rep.
