Nirvana Members Seek to Oust 'Prima Donna' Love

Calling her a greedy, volatile “prima donna,” the two surviving members of influential grunge rock group Nirvana have sued to have the widow of Kurt Cobain thrown off the board controlling the band’s musical legacy. Cobain’s widow Courtney Love last June sued to block the release of a boxed set of Nirvana greatest hits that would have coincided with the 10th anniversary of the band’s chart-topping “Nevermind” album. Now the surviving band members, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, have counter-sued, saying Love is incapable of handling her obligations to their three-way partnership controlling the band’s music. “In truth,… Read more »

Bronfman defends record at Vivendi Universal

Edgar Bronfman Jr. has often been derided as the spoiled rich kid who blew his family’s liquor fortune on Hollywood, but in reality he nearly tripled it. Now, capping six years of intense dealmaking which culminated in folding the Bronfman family-controlled concern Seagram Co. Ltd. into the world’s second largest media company, Vivendi Universal, the soft-spoken mogul plans to walk away, possibly to start a new company. Save for the timing, it was no surprise that on Thursday, Bronfman, 46, said he would step down as executive vice chairman of Vivendi in 2002. The announcement came one day after another… Read more »

Bad Religion Ready "Reunion" CD

For certain punks, there was no Bad Religion from 1996 through 2001. During that dark period, co-songwriter Brett Gurewitz split the seminal act he co-created with his pals in high school. He was disenchanted with the band’s major-label deal (at Atlantic), overwhelmed by the sudden hugeness of Epitaph – the label he founded to release Bad Religion records and eventually home to Rancid and the Offspring – and increasingly strung out on smack. The band would release two albums in his absence, both guided solely by the vision of Gurewitz’s estranged collaborator, Greg Graffin. Both records – 1996’s Gray Race… Read more »

Sting Reached For Different Feel On New Live Album

Out Tuesday (November 20) is…All This Time, the live album Sting recorded in Tuscany, Italy, on September 11. The tone of the performance was, of course, affected by that day’s terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., and Sting pulled a planned webcast of the concert after performing just one song, “Fragile,” as a tribute to the victims. Using a larger band that includes string and horn players, Sting employs different arrangements on most of the album’s 15 songs, and he said that throughout his career he’s felt the freedom to tinker with even his biggest hits. “I’ve… Read more »

Sevendust’s third album, Animosity, is set for release on Tuesday (November 13). The album was in the works long before the September 11 terrorist attacks and the subsequent war on terrorism. Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose revealed about the album title, in an interview conduced shortly after the band visited ground zero, in the neighborhood of New York City that was once home to the World Trade Center. “It’s very, very unfortunately coincidental,” he said. “Obviously that title was made months before any of this stuff happened.
