Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera stepped up to kiss the Queen of Pop’s ring – well, Madonna herself – at the 2003 VMAs, and Lady Gaga got her chance to pay homage this weekend on Saturday Night Live. But rather than play it straight, SNL cast the two in a mock catfight that pit Gaga (the night’s musical guest) against Madge (in town promoting best-of collection Celebration). It all went down during a “Deep House Dish” sketch when DJ Dynasty Handbag (Kenan Thompson) announced “two exciting entertainers, performing together for the very first time.” The pair of slight blond stars… Read more »
Lady GaGa becomes just the third artist in the 16-year history of the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart to collect three No. 1 songs from a debut album. “LoveGame” (Interscope) rises 2-1, marking Lady GaGa’s third No. 1, following “Just Dance” (two weeks) and “Poker Face” (five weeks). The three songs appear on her top five Billboard 200 album, The Fame. The set has sold 1,162,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The singer-songwriter born Stefani Germanotta joins just two prior artists in accomplishing the triumphant triple play. In 1993-94, Ace Of Base reigned consecutively on Mainstream Top 40… Read more »
Alberta rockers Nickelback may have picked up a leading three trophies at the MuchMusic Video Awards last night, giving music critics across the country another reason to groan, but in the end it was all about Lady Gaga’s “flaming boobies.” The critically unpopular group, who picked up three Juno Awards back in March, went into the televised street-oriented awards show – which saw thousands of fans take over the blocks surrounding MuchMusic’s Toronto Queen and John Sts. headquarters – with a leading five MMVA nods, tied with R&B Toronto newcomer Danny Fernandes. Nickelback’s trio of trophies were for best video… Read more »
Kanye West appeared on ABC’s “The View” Wednesday and took the opportunity to announce his forthcoming co-headlining tour with disco queen Lady Gaga. Although he kept the details of the tour light, he spoke excitedly about it. In the past he has said he is a Gaga fan and recently reworked her hit “Poker Face” into “I Make Her Say,” a collaboration with up-and-coming MC Kid Cudi. “She’s talented and so incredible that she’s not an opening act,” he said of the tour. “We’re doing it together, with no opening act.” A representative for West did not provided further details… Read more »
After reuniting for its first show in more than four years, Blink-182 has announced its summer tour dates. The band’s official return comes when they play the The Late Show With Jay Leno on Tuesday, May 21st. Blink will be joined by Fall Out Boy on the road for two-thirds of their reunion jaunt, with Weezer picking up the remaining dates. Last Thursday evening, Blink-182 closed out their set with 2003’s “The Feeling” and Dude Ranch’s “Dammit.” Bassist Mark Hoppus was overjoyed following the performance, a hugely significant event for the band whose members had spent the last four years… Read more »
If you think that Lady Gaga has gotten used to being a pop superstar, think again. No one was as surprised as the New York City native herself to see that the Queen of Pop, Madonna, took some time out of her busy schedule to catch the “Poker Face” singer’s show at New York’s Terminal 5 on Saturday. “I was very humbled that Madonna came to the show,” said Gaga. “And I had been hearing all week that she was going to come, and I was like, ‘Oh, OK,’ and I didn’t want to talk about it or tell anyone… Read more »
Lady GaGa has become the first artist in nearly 10 years to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with her first two singles, a feat not even Madonna has accomplished. “Poker Face” knocked Flo Rida’s “Right Round” out of the top spot, after spending six weeks at number one. GaGa previously led the chart for three weeks in January with “Just Dance.” The last artist to splash onto the scene with a pair of number-one hits was Christina Aguilera, who debuted with “Genie in a Bottle” in 1999 and “What a Girl Wants” in 2000. GaGa already has… Read more »
Nearly 40 years after he wrote the lyric “He not busy being born is busy dying,” Bob Dylan clearly still believes that estimation is right on the mark. Looking snazzy in a black cowboy hat and old-school Western suit, the 60-year-old folk-rock icon was tireless, fearless and masterful throughout his 140-minute show Thursday at the Arena. Within shouting range of Treptow Park, where he played in 1987 when the area was still communist East Germany, the Arena is a onetime bus depot and hangar that now serves as one of the city’s largest music venues. The 7,500-capacity, standing-room-only space served… Read more »
Those awaiting a new Limp Bizkit album will have to wait a little longer. Fresh from directing the debut video for Puddle of Mudd, the new act on his Interscope imprint Flawless, Bizkit frontman Fred Durst has gotten the green light from Intermedia Films to direct his first feature film, “Wanna-Be,” the story of teenage mobsters in New York. “I was stuck in a room for two days,” Durst tells Billboard.com. “It was this test to see if I can withstand [the filmmaking process]. Everyone at the company had these poker faces, so I left not knowing what was going… Read more »
