Brand New overtakes London for one night only

LONDON – A line up such as this is rarely seen in the UK. Brand New, Thrice and Glassjaw are three bands that have never achieved mainstream success, but each has such a following that it only made sense that they would perform at the Wembley Arena.

Chris Brown sentenced for Rihanna assault

Chris Brown was formally sentenced today in Los Angeles after pleading guilty June 22 to assault charges stemming from his Feb. 8 altercation with Rihanna. As expected, Brown was sentenced to five years of formal felony probation, 180 days of community labor and the completion of a 52-week domestic violence counseling program. The sentencing was originally scheduled for August 5, but the judge presiding over the case wanted a clearer picture of Brown’s hard labor schedule before handing down the official penalty. Apple/Palm set for epic battle

Not much rattles Apple. Disciplined and focused, the company lavishes attention on its own elegant products and rarely deigns to discuss rivals. Yet here was Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer and designated stand-in for ailing CEO Steve Jobs, erupting during an earnings call in late January at the mere mention of a pip-squeak competitor. The pest in question was Palm, the fallen pioneer of handheld digital organizers, which two weeks earlier had unveiled a new smartphone, the Palm Pre, to rave reviews. Not only did the Pre have features the iPhone couldn’t match – snazzy multitasking, universal search, a… Read more »

California high court upholds gay marriage ban

California’s Supreme Court upheld the state’s gay marriage ban Tuesday but said the 18,000 same-sex weddings that took place before the prohibition passed are still valid – a ruling decried by gay rights activists as a hollow victory. Demonstrators outside the court booed, wept and yelled, “Shame on you!” Activists said they would go back to the voters as early as next year in a bid to repeal the ban. In a 6-1 decision written by Chief Justice Ron George, the court rejected arguments that the ban approved by the voters last fall was such a fundamental change in the… Read more »

This time around, the indie rock band is aiming just as high — hoping to arrange a collaboration with none other than rapper Snoop Dogg. Grizzly Bear singer-songwriter Ed Droste “has actually been using Twitter to stalk Snoop,” said the group’s Daniel Rossen, a singer-songwriter and guitarist. “We’re both going to be at Bonnaroo, the Tennessee music festival, and although there will be a bunch of people there and the chances of us actually seeing Snoop are… Read more »

The news about Chris Brown’s alleged assault on girlfriend Rihanna has clearly touched a nerve with the public. The range of emotions runs the gamut, from those agreeing that Rihanna should not be made a scapegoat in this saga, to others begging for a story about how, “media commonly condemns celebs before all the facts are out or before they have been convicted.” Brown, 19, turned himself in and was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats in the incident, though the District Attorney’s office kicked the case back to the police on Wednesday asking for more evidence. There were… Read more »

Chris Brown who was arrested a week ago in connection with a domestic violence investigation, said Sunday he is “sorry and saddened” by what happened and is seeking counseling from his pastor and loved ones.
