Indie rockers unite for AIDS benefit album

In 1993, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, the Smashing Pumpkins and Pavement brought AIDS activism into the bedrooms of grunge-obsessed teens on the benefit album ” No Alternative” marrying music to message in a way that registered strongly with Generation X. The project, organized by the Red Hot Organization — an international production company dedicated to fighting AIDs through pop culture — and released by Arista Records sold 292,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan and generated several modern rock radio hits. But the success was a mixed blessing; other major labels went out of their way to… Read more »

Confirming news that Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson let slip recently on “The Carson Daly Show,” Green Day is in the studio with veteran producer Butch Vig working on the follow-up to 2004’s “American Idiot.” In a video posted over the weekend on YouTube, the band is seen in the control room as the camera pans over to Vig, who smiles and extends his middle finger. Instrumental bits of two new songs are heard in the background. Vig is best known for his work on Nirvana’s “Nevermind” but has also logged time behind the boards with Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth,… Read more »

All-American Rejects 'Had To Step It Up' On New LP – Or Else

The All-American Rejects’ second album is truly a work in progress. There are still so many nails exposed and the paint is still so wet that if this album were an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” Ty Pennington would be bellowing stuff like “Come on, guys! Let’s take it up a couple of notches!” into his megaphone. He would also probably be shirtless. The point is, for a record that’s been in the works for eight months, there’s a whole lot that needs to be done. Like, for example, choosing a proper title. When Interscope Records mailed out promo… Read more »

Lollapalooza Music Fest Is Chicago Bound

Los Angeles – Lollapalooza – a marquee touring festival of the 1990s that fell on commercial hard times last year – is returning this year in drastically scaled-down form. Lollapalooza ’05 will run July 23-24 in Chicago’s Grant Park. The band lineup will not be announced until the third week in April. The festival Web site (www.lollapalooza.com) will go live Friday. Lollapalooza began life in 1991 as a major vehicle for the exposure of left-field rock talent. A highly successful summer touring proposition in the early ’90s, it took a five-year hiatus from 1998-2002, as other treks like the Vans… Read more »

3 Doors Down, Macy Gray Among Inaugural Performers

Washington, D.C. – With the Jan. 20 inauguration of President Bush, visitors to the capital won’t be able to swing a cat next week without hitting a ball or party. Although there will be free daytime festivities open to the public during inauguration week, the closed soirees are the hot tickets. The nine “official” nighttime balls, all sponsored by states’ societies, most set for Jan. 19, command most of the attention. All are closed affairs reserved for the Republican Party faithful, with campaign contributors flying in from all over the country. There are also boatloads of “unofficial” parties being thrown… Read more »

Idlewild: A Best-Kept Secret No Longer

Wrap your head around this – you’re in a rock band that has been relatively ignored for about three years, despite having a couple of albums and a ton of singles under your belt. And then suddenly, out of the blue, people start hearing about you – but only because no one knows about you. Weird? Yeah. But that’s basically how things transpired for Scottish rockers Idlewild just a few years ago, flipping their world topsy-turvy in a sadistic twist of ironic fate. Idlewild: “I guess it started with SPIN Magazine naming 100 Broken Windows (the band’s 2000 release, it’s… Read more »
