Actor Michael Pitt’s plans to release a new album and tour the U.S. have been defended by his label boss, Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore, who describes the indie star as an ‘artist’. Pitt rose to fame in 2005’s ‘Last Days’, which was generally considered to be based on the last days of Nirvana star Kurt Cobain, not only playing the iconic singer but also recording the film’s soundtrack. Last year Moore signed his band Pagoda to his Ecstatic Peach label, and hit back at critics comparing his music career to that of badly received musical ventures for Keano Reaves… Read more »
Sonic Youth will take their sixteenth album, Murray Street, out on a twenty-two-date tour, starting August 1st in Dallas. The tour will be the group’s second as a five-piece, as the group brought producer Jim O’Rourke onboard while promoting their last studio record, 2000’s NYC Ghosts and Flowers. The dates will run through a September 1st appearance at the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle and include a free concert at Central Park in the band’s hometown of New York City. The majority of Murray Street, which will be released on June 25th, was written last summer, and the band recorded the… Read more »
In addition to the release of their new album, Murray Street, next month, Sonic Youth have begun work on a trio of reissues, the first of which, Dirty, is scheduled for release this summer. The band has been pouring through unreleased demos and songs for the series, which will see Dirty, Daydream Nation and Goo remastered and reissued with new liner notes and a bonus CD of new material. “It’s pretty much together,” singer-guitarist Thurston Moore says of the new Dirty. “We weren’t too interested in putting live stuff on there; it would take forever to go through it. A decade after the release of their most popular album, Dirty, dissonant art rockers Sonic Youth are reissuing the disc along with two of their other titles as double-CDs bloated with bonus material. Dirty, Goo (1990) and Daydream Nation (1988) will be issued before summer by Universal with all of the original tracks remastered, along with previously unheard demos, live cuts and B-sides, the band’s publicist said. Sonic Youth also plan to issue three of their video titles on DVD: “The Goo That Lives on in My Heart” (1991), “1991: The Year Punk Broke” (1992), which chronicles the group’s 1991… Read more »
Though they’d rather be making their own movies, Sonic Youth are back in the studio laying down atmospheric music for a French film and noisy dinosaur rock for their next album. “We’re improvising and getting into these long, elaborate stretches of music and keeping an ear for soundtrack cues but at the same time listening for how they would work for song elements,” singer/guitarist Thurston Moore said last week. “We sit around drinking iced coffee, and then we start getting it together and playing and all hell breaks loose and it just becomes like a creative mosh pit for a… Read more »
