Upcoming Nickelback LP Seems Aimed At Shedding Pop Image

Chad Kroeger sings about “a world full of killing and blood spilling” in the hit song “Hero,” and in that kind of world Nickelback’s melodic relationship songs don’t seem to have quite as much impact as they once did. Perhaps that’s why Kroeger boosted the musical heft and lyrical import for the band’s third record, The Long Road, due September 23. Sure, there are still enough love songs and light, lighter-raising moments to make the gals swoon. But even on the slower tunes, the guitars shudder with raw intensity, conveying Kroeger’s aim to shed the mainstream pop image he cultivated… Read more »

Nickelback's Label Explains Santana Single Change

Nickelback’s record label has released a statement explaining why it wouldn’t let Chad Kroeger appear on the new Santana single, even though he’s on Santana’s album. Kroeger wrote and sang on “Why Don’t You & I” for Santana’s Shaman, which appeared on Arista Records. But when it came time to release the song as a single, Roadrunner Records nixed Kroeger’s participation, and Santana-at Kroeger’s recommendation-replaced him with Alex Band from the group the Calling. In its statement, Roadrunner said, “The agreement between Arista and Roadrunner was for Chad Kroeger to perform on the Santana album Shaman. There was no intention… Read more »

Nickelback's Chad Kroeger Brings Theory Of A Deadman To Life

Many fans credit Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and his songs with helping them get through tough times. Tyler Connolly, frontman of Theory of a Deadman, has Kroeger to thank for just about everything. Before Nickelback were rock stars, Connolly was a struggling musician without a band, manager or record deal and with only a pipe dream of ever being recognized outside his hometown of Vancouver, Canada. Then one night at a party Connolly handed a demo tape to Kroeger, which led to an enthusiastic call from the burgeoning musician, who wanted to produce Theory. Kroeger’s contribution didn’t end there. When Alice… Read more »

Nickelback's Next Single Inspired By 'How You Remind Me' Girl

If three singles can help sell in excess of 4 million records, why not roll out a fourth? This fall Nickelback will release “Woke Up This Morning” as the next offering from their breakthrough LP, Silver Side Up. The song, which was written in January 2000, addresses two emotional issues that affected frontman Chad Kroeger during the creation of the track. The first was the loss of his grandmother, who passed away a few days before he started writing the lyrics. “I was just really unimpressed with the way the whole funeral took place,” he said recently. “I felt it… Read more »

Jerry Cantrell Delivers Bittersweet, AIC-Heavy Set At Nickelback Gig – Review

Roughly one month after the tragic death of his close friend and former bandmate Layne Staley, Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell returned to the town that made them both famous, and despite the feeling that a big hole existed where his former partner once stood, it was a rocking, if bittersweet, trip back in time. With plenty of classic AIC material in tow, Cantrell took a sparse but enthusiastic audience at Key Arena on Friday back to the halcyon days of the early ’90s – a time of lank hair, big angst and bigger guitars, before the Bizkit and its… Read more »
