If you think you know Kim Dracula, you have no idea. With every single drop that the Australian genre-defying star treats us to, they pose more questions than they answer. And isn’t that what music is all about? Pushing expectations, treading without trepidation and scaring those who beg for conformity. And whilst the last few tracks they have shared have been chameleon-like in approach, flitting between sounds and styles with gleeful abandon, their latest sticks to one lane. But it is no less terrifying and powerful.
That track is “Death Before Designer” and sits neatly in the emo-trap pile. Harsh beats and intense imagery rip and tear at the ear with malicious intent. And Kim themselves sound utterly vicious, snapping and barking out affirmations and intentions like it’s their last action in this world. It also features City Morgue’s SosMula, adding an extra layer of intensity to proceedings.
The result is a song that takes what has come before, slashes at it and then displays the remains with pride. It’s music that goes beyond music, an experiment in how much you can possibly take. And that’s a truly exhilarating place to be.
If you fancy diving deeper into the madness of Kim Dracula, here are some of their other offerings from the last few months.
Here’s “Seventy Thorns”, which combines smooth lounge and gritty thrash with a special appearance from Korn’s Jonathan Davis:
And here is “Drown”, which is modern metal at its most explosive and eclectic, with plenty of mind-bending surprises thrown in for good measure:
